I sat at my kitchen table, my mind lost in a void. Mindy, the same Mindy that had blackmailed, drugged, assaulted, and disrespected me claimed to actually love me. As well as claiming that the Samantha, my goddess, was instrumental in both of us losing our virginities to each other back in college. The color Mindy painted of Samantha was one of darkness. She claimed the Samantha I had been idolizing was nothing more than a phantasm. The real Samantha was much more cutthroat and conniving.

However, anything that Mindy said had to be taken with a grain of sand. There’s really no way for me to know if she was playing me or if she was being honest. I knew I still needed more information before I could make that determination.

I spent the previous night and most of the following day with Mindy. Our sexual relationship (prior to me remembering that we slept together in college) began by her catching Samantha and I kissing and her recording it. She then used the video as her tool to blackmail me into being her lapdog.

At work, Mindy had a reputation of being kind of a major witch. People were afraid to cross her because there was really no telling what she would do as retribution. After being blackmailed by Mindy I learned several key things. The first of which was that she would push the ethical boundaries to get what she wanted. The second, she was unashamed of who she was. The third and most important was that the Mindy that I had become accustomed to at work was not the real Mindy. I wasn’t sure who the real Mindy was, I was still learning. But one thing that I was absolutely certain of was that she had had a lot of darkness and pain in her life. If someone had been there to help her, as a friend, then I doubt she would have turned out the way that she did.

I can’t say that that someone should have been me. When we slept together in college I was drugged and didn’t remember it happening. Over ten years have passed between then and now. I was a completely different person then, we both were. Perhaps had I known, I could have done something different. Perhaps I could have, at the very least, befriended her. I’m not sure. But I wish I’d had the chance to do something, anything.

After spending much of the day with Mindy I drove straight home. I couldn’t reconcile my feelings. If, and that’s a big if, what Mindy said was true then I would have to reevaluate everything about the last 5
