    Chapter One: Jubilee

St. Francis Assisi once wrote, Lord, make me an instrument of your peace/ where there is hatred, let me sow love… Where there is darkness, light. Every creature must choose what it brings into this world and what it thus sows. Many creatures of the night choose to sow only greed, vanity and pain. There are those, however, that sow truth, justice, peace, and love. They are the few that choose not just to be strong, but also brave. Not just eternal, but also serene. Not every creature of the night is called to personify these attributes. A select few are truly able to handle the weight of the glory. However for every one that is called, the darkness of night retreats ever so slightly into the light…

Mira pulled her 1979 white Jeep Wagoneer into the driveway just as the sun was going down. The Wagoneer was in nearly pristine condition. There were of course a couple changes to it as time went on. The stereo in the Wagoneer was new with an mp3/mp4 adaptor plug, and the seats had also been updated with heating and electric position control. For the most part, the Jeep still looked like it did in 1979 when she bought it. It could have used a bath and there was a little bit of rust showing on the passenger’s side. Yet, it seemed to Mira that the Jeep hadn’t even aged a day.

The house was in even better condition. It was built in the late 1890s with a Victorian plantation theme. Mira was told that the house at one time fell into disrepair, but looking at it now you would not be able to tell. It was a dark mahogany stained wood-sided house, trimmed in green. It has a wraparound porch, 3 full baths, 10 bedrooms, 2 stories and a furnished basement. It looked so massive from the outside that Mira doubted anyone would actually be unobservant of the house. Yet, there in the deep, uninhabited woods of Tennessee it had remained unbothered and kept secret for over 100 years.

Mira sighed as she reached behind the front passenger’s seat and got her shopping bags. Her sunglasses were still on as she gazed at the horizon where the moon was just poking out. Tomorrow was her Jubilee, and the moon would be a 97% waxing gibbous. Tonight, however, the moon was only 89% illuminated. Yet, she could still feel the pull. She still sensed the call in every cell of her being even if it had just started to rise. The moon called to be howled at and sought after. And oh, how she wished to follow. But, she had been warned by Maverick to quit her moon-rising howls. For tomorrow, she would be an adult.

50 years had passed since Mira had started this life. 50 years… and to most who saw Mira would think she was only 21-25. In fact, she was 75 years old, but at the age of 25 her body had stopped aging. It was almost 50 years to the day that the change had first taken place. That is what made tomorrow so special. For tomorrow was the day Mira had truly changed, the first day the curse had entered her blood stream. Most had to wait another couple of weeks to a full month before their bodies welcomed adulthood. Not Mira, her Jubilee fell right on the first change of the month. It was a rarity to celebrate the Jubilee as well as the moon, but not unheard of. However, today Mira wasn’t feeling special or rare. She was feeling old, like 75 years’ worth of old…

Mira still doesn’t remember much from that night in 1967. It was mid-April and spring had come on mildly. Mira was a game warden at the time. Her area covered nearly 20 miles. Those 20 miles included the woods and game preserve behind her now home. It had been a quiet couple of weeks leading up that fateful April 10th night. The animals were gearing up for mating and summer. The people were preparing for hunting and fishing seasons. It had started out as a normal month, a normal week, a normal day.

What was odd were the phone calls Mira got that night. The first phone call had come in just after Midnight. It was from the dispatcher for the local police department. A civilian had called in wanting the game warden’s number. They had seen suspicious activity in woods, the woods behind her future home. It was cold that spring night, so Mira had slipped on her coat as well as her uniform before grabbing her keys. It was now around 12:45 am when the second call came. It was a civilian reporting a possible wolf spotting in the area.

Mira didn’t think about the weirdness of the calls. She didn’t even consider that something could go wrong. She just ran out to her town-wagon and raced to the area. Wolves were rare in Tennessee even then. One being so far outside of Canada should have alerted her. However, wolves were spotted all the time. They were usually big dogs that had no reason to be there. A tranquilizer and a quick pick up for the shelter should have done the trick. Yet, that is not at all what happened.

Mira arrived at the woods she would one day call home around 1:15 am. It was dark cloudless night. No moon was visible in the sky. Every star could be seen from where Mira parked her town-wagon. She reached in the back of her brown 1962 town-wagon to get her shotgun with the tranquilizers. She stepped out into the chilly air with her auburn hair blowing in the breeze and set out in search of the animal that had been spotted.

It was creepy at first in those woods. Every muscle Mira had was alert and ready to run. She was cautious and tense especially in dark woods so late at night. Then 30 minutes had passed as Mira swept her flashlight in front of her looking for any signal of a big predatory animal. Nothing… 30 minutes of owls hooting, bats screeching, and silence. There is nothing in these woods, Mira thought as she continued her trek farther to the heart. I can loop around when I reach the other end and make it back to my bed before 3 am, she told herself.

That’s when she heard it; the distinct growl of a canine: low, throaty, and fierce. Her flashlight swept from side to side searching for the dog that made such a terrifying sound. The shotgun was loaded and ready. She had done this several times. She just needed to locate the sound… It hit her like a bus. The large fury animal pounded into her body and threw Mira up against a large oak tree. Her head hit the bark hard creating a large gash on her occipital bone. The animal’s paws came up at her face and clawed down to her torso ripping her coat and shirt before she could get her hands up. The animal stayed standing on her lower torso, slicing at her coat and shirt with is claws. She tried to shove it off, but the beast was too big for her. She struggled to reach her shotgun, but it had been thrown 10 feet from where she lay. Finally, the beast had her shoulder exposed and it bit down, hard and wet. It felt like the beast was biting her with every drop of saliva it had. Then just as quickly as the attack happened, it ended. The beast leapt off Mira throwing her head back into the tree. Just before she passed out, Mira thought she got a look at the beast. It was a wolf, a very large wolf with dark brown fur and glowing yellow eyes.

Mira came to just before sunrise. A tall, lean gruff looking man was checking her pulse and feeling for a fever. What’s your name? he asked.

    Mira, she softly whispered.

Mira? Like the star? he said loud. She nodded. Come on, Mira. Stay awake. My name is Maverick. Can you walk? She shook her head. Mira felt feverish and weak. All of her energy had been zapped in the attack. There was no way she was getting out of those woods on her own two legs. That’s when she felt Maverick lift her up. Slowly and gently he got her into his arms and on to his feet.

I’m so sorry, Mira star that this happened. Did you see what got you? Mira was in and out of it now; only catching about every other to every third word. She shook her head hoping that would silence him. No? he said loudly. Well, Mira star, I really hope it wasn’t what I think it was. He slightly jostled her. Stay awake, Mira star. It’s a long walk to the house, and I think you got a concussion. Just stay with me, Star. Mira smiled slightly. He was annoying because he would not let her sleep. Yet, his voice was soothing and smooth like an old fighter pilot. He continued to drone on, saying how she needed to stay awake and stay with him. He looked down at her smile and watched as she nestled her head deeper into his chest. It wasn’t long before Maverick knew he would protect her at all costs.

20 minutes after finding Mira, Maverick was coming into the yard of the house. Corrine was on the porch waiting like the mother hen she is. Maverick, why do I smell blood? she shouted from the porch when she caught sight of him. He looked somehow different to Corrine. His salt-and-pepper hair was still messed in typical Maverick form. His grayish-blue eyes were still hard and sad. It was the bundle his slightly tan arms were carrying that was different. Maverick was nearly to the porch when Corrine realized it was a girl. Her pale hands shot immediately to her black hair and began smoothing it down out of nervous habit. Her piercing green eyes filled with worry as she paced the porch waiting for Maverick to finally make it to the house. Maverick? Corrine shouted from her post. Maverick, what is that you are carrying?

It’s not a what, Corrine, Maverick said as he reached the porch and headed to where Corrine was waiting. It’s a who. As in whom am I carrying? And this is Mira like the star, Corrine. Maverick extended his arms for Corrine to have a look. Her face distorted in anguish as she got a whiff and look at poor injured Mira.

    What happened? Corrine shouted accusingly.

I don’t know! I found her like this! She needs our help and possible instruction. I’m sorry, Corrine. I know the smell of blood might be too much for you. I can handle this.

Like hell you are! If I could handle it in the Civil War where they were cutting off limbs and the two World Wars with the bombs and shrapnel, I can handle this. It was then that Matt with his light brown hair, deep blue eyes, and baseball cap walked onto the porch.

What is going on here, Love? he asked Corrine.

Maverick brought home a possible stray, Corrine explained. Tell Cian to bring me some water, and Sheenagh to bring bandages and antiseptic, please. Matt had turned around and was heading into the house when Corrine shouted back, And tell Ulysses to stay in his bed room. I don’t need him poking around! With that, Matt was gone and Corrine was escorting Mira and Maverick into the living room. As they passed through the doorway, Mira saw a framed wedding certificate. It was dated 1805 with the names Corrine and Matt Gealach…

It had taken Mira more than a few months to wrap her mind around this new life and world she had been thrust into. Now fifty years later, Mira still had not completely adjusted to it. It wasn’t just the Jubilee that was on her mind that night either. Mira truly loved this old Victorian house and her odd family. She loved being in those woods. She loved this world that was now hers. Yet, Mira felt just a tiny bit adrift in it. She knew that Corrine had seen this in her, and she also knew that Corrine would make sure Maverick and everyone else went out of their way to prove how grounded and found Mira is in this world.

It had been a long day at work for Mira, and thoughts of it and the upcoming party distracted her as she entered the house. Mira was in her room and setting down shopping bags before she realized someone else was in there too. Crap, she thought as she jumped and turned to face her bed. There just barely beneath the comforter lay Ulysses. His straw colored hair lain out on the pillow and his hands crossed just enough to notice them under the blanket. He looked dead, like he had been laid out in a coffin. Thank you, Ulysses, for ruining another nap. Mira sighed and abruptly turned around to head down stairs.

The downstairs bathroom contained Mira’s emergency toiletries. For the most part, the downstairs was Matt’s and Corrine’s. However lately, Mira had been sharing it with them. Ulysses had intensified his interest in Mira within the past two months. She guessed she probably should feel flattered and a bit swoony. Yet in all honesty, Mira just felt annoyed. Half her hair supplies, make-up, show gel, and pajamas were hidden in the first floor bath. Not to mention, Ulysses had a way of choosing those times when Mira would want her bed to sleep in it. If it hadn’t been for the fear of what Maverick might do, Mira probably would have been more boisterous with her complaining.

Mira had changed into her pajamas and was preparing for her nap as she studied herself in the mirror. Her dark auburn hair had become onyx black with white tips. She scrunched her nose as she looked at her hair. The orange that she had dyed the tips that morning was now an off white. Normally, Mira could get a color to last for a month before the full moon. This month, however, no dye had lasted any more than a week. She focused in on her eyes as she thought about that. They had gone from brownish green to light gray. She knew that that also was part of the moon this month. With Jubilee and adulthood came the spirit color of the eyes. The color had been leeching out over the fifty years, only to congregate as this whitish-gray color right before the moon. Ugh! I hate this! Nothing is as it was. I mean, heck, I’d probably be completely different person to most of my family and friends now, Mira thought.

She sighed as she left the bathroom. With such a long day and all the party prep happening, Mira was exhausted. She laid down in the only place that felt acceptable, the big oversized black leather couch. She rarely slept on it. Everyone in the house knew Corrine’s rules for the furniture: no rough housing, no plopping, no food, no sleeping. In this way, the furniture in the house would last years. However, Corrine was also very lenient when it came to the rules, often times indulging those she loved just for fun.

It was no surprise to Mira when she woke to Corrine’s soft girly voice. It was also no surprise to see her piercing green eyes and beautiful face huddled down close to Mira’s own. It was no surprise, but it was still startling. Wake up, Star! Time to start your day, Corrine had said when she saw Mira’s eyes flutter open. Her smile was tender and her touch soft as she gently shook Mira.

What time is it? Mira asked groggily.

Seven, Corrine said turning her back and heading into the kitchen.

7pm? That can’t be. I mean I just laid down Rine.

No, silly, it’s 7 am. Now get up. I made your favorite breakfast: pancakes, sweet waffles, ham and bacon.

What? You let me sleep for twelve hours?! Mira said as she got off the couch and headed toward the kitchen enticed by the smell of food.

You looked so peaceful, Star. And I figured you needed the sleep with the party and work and all, Corrine said with a wink.

Mira shrugged. There was no use in fighting Corrine when she decided to indulge you, because most likely you wouldn’t realize it till after it passed. Better to ask forgiveness than permission was Corrine’s motto. I’m starved! Mira said as she took the plate from Corrine with a giant smile.

I bet! You slept for twelve hours, and didn’t eat before you passed out. Enjoy, my love, Corrine said laying the peanut butter and syrup in front of Mira. "Oh and: Ortu Luna in laudem gaudent." [Rising Moon in praise rejoice]

"Nos lumina vespere inveniet vox," [We lights of evening find a voice] Mira said without thinking. Corrine smiled. Mira did have the Jubilee greeting and response down. That was good. The party might actually be a success, thought Corrine as she watched Mira dig into her plate of pancakes.

Matt walked into the kitchen when Mira had finished her first plate. Eating in the Gealach house was always encouraged. With sky-high metabolisms, the idea of putting on weight was pretty ridiculous. He smiled when he saw Mira. She was up helping herself to another plate with her behind and hips wiggling like a dog with a tail. "Non luna lupinotuum, Mira" [Don’t moon a werewolf] he said as approached her.

Corrine was sitting at the table enjoying her small plate when Matt entered the kitchen. She laughed at Matt’s remark to Mira. Mira smiled and turned toward him. "Et lamia non curreret palis," [And vampires shouldn’t run with stakes] Mira replied. Matt smiled knowing this to be proper turn of phrase for his remark. He kissed Mira on the forehead and picked up a plate for himself.

"Ortu Luna in laudem gaudent, Mira," He said as he got a small portion of the food.

"Nos lumina vespere inveniet vox, Matt," Mira replied.

"Ah Mira, Non luna lupinotuum," Maverick said as he entered the kitchen.

"Et lamia non curreret palis, Maverick," Mira said as Maverick walked over to where she was sitting and placed a pair of very dark sunglasses on her.

"Ortu Luna in laudem gaudent, Star," He said and kissed her forehead.

"Nos lumina vespere inveniet vox," Mira said with a blush. It was all common practice on the day of Jubilee for the honoree to be the center of attention. Mira, although used to the morning greetings and mealtime pleasantries, was becoming quite embarrassed. She did not relish attention like others. In fact, she was beginning to wish to fade into obscurity. She had learned the phrases for greeting on Jubilee but wished everyone would stop greeting her now.

Did you show Mira what came in the mail, Rine? Matt asked.

Oh, I almost forgot! Thank you, Love, Corrine said, pulling out two packages from behind her chair. Cian and Sheenagh sent you Jubilee presents, Mira. I know they wish to be here with you, but Sheenagh said last night on the phone that the orphanage in India is still understaffed. And Cian said two nights ago, that the refugees were still starving. So, as you can see, the world calls your brother and sister far from the revelries of our little world.

It’s okay, Rine. I wasn’t expecting anything anyways. I do appreciate the gestures though. I’ll have to send Cian and Sheenagh long thank you notes and pictures… Mira had gone to take off her glasses as she was talking. Maverick came up behind her and pushed them back on.

Leave the dark glasses on your eyes until the moon is full, Star. It’s tradition, Maverick told her. Corrine and Matt nodded to this piece of advice. Mira knew that she would not be allowed to take the sunglasses off now until the party when everyone found out her soul color.

She started with Sheenagh’s package first. The card was simple, just a post-card from the Taj Mahl. It said: "Happy Jubilee, Mira! I know you are Mom’s favorite, but this is going to earn me points. (She drew a smiley face with its tongue sticking out :p) I might even move up to in status. Love ya. ‘Christos Anesti!’ [Christ has risen] Crap I meant ‘Non luna lupinotuum!’ No that’s not it… ‘Ortu Luna in laudem gaudent!’ –Sheenagh" Mira smiled. She knew that she would have to start Sheenagh’s letter with the response to all of those. It was a good way to get a reply.

Inside the package was a silver bracelet. The center of it was sculpted to look like a bud of wolfsbane. The chain was designed like the leaves. In very center of the wolfsbane bloom with a cross with what appeared to be an actual petal of wolfsbane encapsulated in amber. It was truly gorgeous. However, the pinnacle of the bracelet was the small piece of paper that hung from the clasp. In Sheenagh’s handwriting, it read, I’m not silver; I’m platinum! 22-carat platinum actually, Mira thought with a smile.

Cian’s package was even simpler. It came with only a note written on old notebook paper: "Dear Adopted Sis… Oh God! What if Mom and Dad haven’t told you you’re adopted yet? Don’t tell them I told you! Keep that between us. ‘Christos Anesti!’ ‘Non luna lupinotuum!’ ‘Ortu Luna in laudem gaudent!’ -Cian" It was wrapped in simple brown paper, no cardboard, nothing to really protect it. Inside the paper was a beautiful handmade/carved set of rosary or prayer beads. They were strung together on the thinnest wire Mira had ever seen. She suspected it was
