    NIGEL’S HOLIDAY

    Lightning split the night, breaking open the sky like a crack in the firmament. The earth seemed to shake as thunder crashed down and bellowed about the looming hills. In sinister counterpoint, wind howled and roared, whipping trees viciously back and forth in a frenzy of violent gusts. A cloud of bats stitched across the swollen, gibbous moon, their eldritch skreeking like a horde of demons. In a second flash of lightning a massive, grim fortress flickered into being, darkly brooding atop a lofty crag.

    Clouds swelled, swelled and broke, disgorging a torrent of freezing rain, drowning even the thunder in its hammering. Water ran madly in rivulets on every surface. Black, roiling clouds swallowed the moon.

    One of those rivulets ran in a straight line down the neck of Nigel Hawthorne, best-selling writer of Gothic romance novels. Sod off, he told it silently, between sneezes. Nigel was, at this point, not a happy man. He’d been on the road for five hours, and badly wanted his tea.
