    DANSE MACABRE

Mrs Chan was late again. Terry watched with mounting rage as she sauntered across the floor and shoved herself into the centre of Antonio’s carefully ordered Salsa class, throwing it into disarray. Bloody old bat. A couple of the more advanced students shot her slitty-eyed looks, but no one actually said anything. Antonio, of course, took it in his stride, although Terry knew he’d have to listen to him moaning and bitching later on.

He sighed and returned to his contemplation of the accounts. It was not a pleasant occupation. In the last few months, the Firebird School of Dance had seen a marked drop in the attendance of male students. It wasn’t so much the diminished fees that worried him, although that was a problem in itself, but that Basic Salsa, his flagship class, was his number one source of new students. People came, enjoyed themselves, learned a bit, and signed on for private lessons. It had always been this way. If the numbers got too far skewed, people, or the ladies at least, didn’t learn as quickly or enjoy it as much because they spent too long waiting to take a turn with a partner and not enough time actually dancing.

Tonight was the worst it had been yet, with only two men, including Antonio, to ten ladies. Terry groaned softly and pushed his hand through his hair, disordering his carefully oiled waves. He had to get more men in the class. But how? He’d already increased his advertising budget, which he could ill afford, and spent a dismal series of lunch hours handing out leaflets in the street.
