    Ties That Bind

    Ain’t it the way, when things are going good we manage to find some way of carving out hurt.

    When it’s bad we can band together and find comfort. It’s like the whole world is trying to drag us down, and all we’ve got is the need to claw our way through. It’s those hard times that bring people closer, they tell us, we build character, build connection. Something to tie us together.

    Character. That was one of my daddy’s favorites. But then, he talked a lot. At least when he wasn’t out cold drunk or beating up on mom and me. Whatever he could lay hands on copped the brunt of his anger.

    That built character all right. The thing is, he was right in a way—though he showed me in the worst way possible. I got through that, and it made me who I am.

    He wasn’t even my real father. It was part of my precocious brattiness that mom insisted I call him that. Whenever I did it came out like I was spitting it, and that was how it felt. Should she have stayed with him? Probably not. Is it as simple as that? What do you think?

    I didn’t want to start talking about daddy. It’s just one of those things that keeps coming back. No surprise it happens when I’m not in the cheeriest state.
