About this ebook
These stories are about a young boy and his Grampa . It also is a story of my younger years.
L.Gene Mitchell
I grew up in the 1950's so some of these stories are related to my younger days. These stories have some lessons to be learned. You must get into the book to find out what lessons these are. Personally I am a retired hardwood flooring contractor and started writing about 10 years ago. I have written 3 volumes of memoirs but they are not in print ...yet .Another volume of Grampa and JJ will be published soon.

1GRANDPA AND JJ’S BIG ADVENTURE
What was that noise?
Grandpa asked, bolting to an erect position. He spun his head around to see what was transpiring around him.
Oh that. That was just that new fad that hit the country a few weeks back, they call it a
Frisbee. All the kids have them now," Nana responded.
What will they think of next? You never know what people will dream up. Probably someday they’ll even put a man on the moon.
Grandpa and Nana had taken their grandson JJ to the park for an afternoon of fun and games. Grandpa had dozed off momentarily when this flying object of unknown origin went whizzing past his ear. JJ had taken up tossing the plastic disc back and forth with a little boy whom he had befriended.
JJ was at the age that when new things appeared on the market, he just naturally had to have one, and Grandma was the one to get her little JJ
whatever he wanted. It was amazing how these little tykes got the older generation to bite on their every whim.
Just about the time it was to depart for home, Grandpa got a bump on the back of his head from an errant toss by none other than the precious little JJ. Grandpa was getting red in the face, he was about to yell, but Nana stepped in. He’s just a little boy. Let it pass. You know, you were young once yourself and did foolish things.
Not me. I never had a plate to throw around, and if I did, I probably would have broken my mom’s good china. Then I would
ketch it from Mom with a good swift kick in the britches.
JJ was the apple of Nana’s eye and nothing would ever change that fact. He wound her around his baby finger like a vine clinging to the wall at Wrigley Field. He was so cute and never did anything wrong. (Right.) He was a typical boy from the tip of his hair to the bottom of his cute, little pinkies. A darling if you ever saw one. Just a smile from his crimson lips and you knew you were hooked.
JJ and Grandpa had other times together like when they went fishing for the first time. JJ and Grandpa were a pair. They had been going off on adventure since JJ was old enough to go off on his own. JJ was about five when Grandpa thought it would be a good idea to get him into fishing. Gramps was just an ordinary pan fisherman like his dad had been. Big lunkers were not in Grandpa’s realm. A pan fish fisherman was a meat fisherman; he provided meat for the table and his family. Trophy fish were for the elite in the world and Gramps never wanted to be an uppity sort.
The first day of fishing for Grandpa and JJ was to be done on the first day a summer vacation. Grandpa had inquired around as to where the good spots were around the area. A local angler told Grandpa of a spot down at Whitewater Lake and he told him just where the spot was. Most of Grandpa’s fishing had been in northern Wisconsin after he retired, so he didn’t know the local hot spots. So the die was cast, or should we say the line was cast, for a full day of fun and excitement.
The first day of summer vacation arrived at 6:00 a.m. at Grandpa’s house. Coffee was waiting in the brand new drip coffee maker Nana had purchased down at the new, big discount department store. These new big stores were cropping up everywhere. They sold everything from socks and underwear to tooth brushes and Alka-Seltzer. Okay, the coffee was made and one cup was in the travel mug and the other was in the thermos. Gramps was about set. The night before Grandpa had put together a few sandwiches and some sweets in the picnic basket. Munchies were a must-have for little tykes. They ate from morning to night, and Grandpa knew in advance that JJ had an all-day appetite. Grandpa was almost as excited as JJ was about this fishing adventure, and in his haste he forgot to have breakfast. So be it. He would have some snacks later.
Grandpa headed out the door and Nana hollered out after him, Don’t be too late tonight. You know we have card club at Roy and Gale’s house.
"It’s a good thing you reminded
