About this ebook
The stamp history of British India is one of the oldest and most versatile in the world. The versatility is mainly because besides the British, some of the Princely States ruled by native rulers as vassals of the British India ventured into issuing their own stamps. Possibly, India is the only area where semi-independent vassal states of a colonial power issued their own stamps, sometimes in competition with the Europeans themselves. In smaller states, the need for postal service was mainly for official communication of the people with the Royal Durbar while in the case of large states, either fragmented like that of Gwalior or Baroda or contiguous ones like Hyderabad or Kashmir, it was regular communication, both personal and official.
There are many reasons why Indian stamps were considered exotic, the primary reason being the stamps were of a very poor quality and information not being readily available. In most of the cases, the stamps were issued for a very short period and the world was aware of stamps of a country only after it stopped issuing the stamps or a particular issue. As a consequence of this, the cost of stamps with cost above £10000 is not uncommon.
This book gives a view of philatelic history of all of the known entities in British India. In total, along with the British, 34 States situated in current day India issued their own stamps and 6 Princely States used British stamps overprinted with their names(Convention States). At least three Princely States attempted to issue their stamps but did not for various reasons. Along with these, there are the stamps used in Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the Japanese Occupation and cinderellas/unissued stamps of various entities.
