1. Welcome
Stamp collecting, also known as having a philatelic passion, is one of the oldest popular hobbies in the nation, if not the world. Thousands of people have collected stamps over the decades, and now there is a huge community of supporters and collection sharers alike.
We love stamp collecting as well, and that is why we have put together this book to help you get started. We are going to look at starting your collection, where to get rare and unique stamps for a good price, how to protect your collection, how to make a profit from it, and even how to enjoy stamp collecting with others.
So sit back, relax, and get your philatelic blood boiling!
2. Why People Collect Stamps
There are many reasons that people may begin collecting stamps. If you ask one stamp collector how he got into the hobby, you would get a completely different answer from another collector.
That said, the many, varied reasons for collecting stamps may appeal to you if you are looking for a new hobby. Doubtless, if you are reading this book, then you are probably already interested in stamp collecting. Enough so that you are serious about it.
In this case, we would love to share with you some of the many reasons people collect stamps! Perhaps one will jump out at you and say, this is why you want to get into collecting.
Having a Hobby
Most people these days who get into stamp collecting are interested in having a hobby. They may suddenly have more free time (such as being retired) and want to find something fun and relaxing to fill that time with, or they may want to change hobbies for whatever reason.
Essentially, people in this world need hobbies that help them to unwind, use their minds, have some adventure, and preferably not break their banks. Stamp collecting lets you do all of this and then some.
If you have gone through a lot of other hobbies and are still looking for the perfect one, then we feel that stamp collecting may be just for you. It does not take a lot of time, but can be rewarding both mentally and financially. It also creates something tangible that you can pass on to future generations.
Easy On the Wallet
Stamp collecting is something that people can get into from the time they are a small child because it is very inexpensive. Just by purchasing a small sheet of the latest stamps in your local post office every month, you can begin a collection for many, many years.
This can continue well into adulthood. In fact, no matter what your financial situation, you can start a collection just about any time.
Of course, if you want to get into collecting rarer, older, and more special stamps, it may cost you more money. But we will go over some methods to get rare stamps cheaply later. For now, recognize that starting a stamp collection has a very low start-up cost. It is certainly cheaper than getting into some crafts or other collections that have higher investment cost.
