    The sound of a crash followed by a yelp came through the open door of the living room. A woman’s voice uttering a string of rushed words was interrupted by a smooth, soothing male voice but only for a moment before the shrillness creeping into the woman's voice rose in volume and overrode it.

    Kris sighed, lowered the kettle and leaned her hands on the counter, listening. Would she have to intervene?

    The swish of slippers before the already open door of the kitchen bumped against the counter and her mother, Joanne, rushed inside. Kris! He has a beer. Her lips narrowed and her eyes flashed dangerously.

    A ginger beer. It has no alcohol in it. Kris pushed herself away from the counter and faced her mother. Since her mother was an alcoholic, Kris made sure that there was no alcohol in her four-room apartment, refusing to buy even alcohol-filled candies, not that that stopped Joanne from bringing in the alcohol herself. After her mother had gone to rehab a year ago, she had relapsed five times, the last time being four months ago. She had been home for a month now, and she had stayed sober. Cranky and quickly irritated, but sober.

    It's a beer, Joanne said, sulkiness in her voice. He wants me out of the way, he told me that himself. He said if I start to drink, you'll just send me back to rehab again.
