Isabella Thornton took a sip of champagne while she stared over the glass at Andrew, a brunet who stood by the spiral staircase in the corner of the large hotel hall, beside the bar. Andrew Bradford, the tall, well built man who was her bodyguard, her hero, her childhood sweetheart and the object of her sexual fantasies. He was so many things to her, and yet, he wasn't the thing she desired the most; he wasn't her lover. She sighed and smoothed her blond hair, gathered in a chignon, while her eyes darted across the crowded hall to land on a tall blond and a red-headed girl, her cousin Kalen and his fiancée Rose. They were the reason she had attended this party, even though she hated crowds.

Don't you agree? A hand touched her arm.

She flinched and shifted away from the touch before she faced the owner of the hand, an older man, her grandmother's friend. I'm afraid that I can't.

A waiter with a tray passed by.

She set her glass on the tray, excused herself and strolled across the room. She had always liked Kalen; he and his sister Kate had always played with her when they were little, unlike her brothers, Ian and Chris, who always ignored her. Stopping beside her cousin, she congratulated him on his engagement and introduced herself to Rose.

Oh, I've heard all about you. Rose leaned against Kalen.

Kalen wrapped his arm around his fiancée and pulled her against his side.

Nothing bad, I hope, Isabella said.

No, no, quite the contrary. Ann is always full of praise for you.
