A Christmas wedding.

Elizabeth Barritt smiled as she watched Jamie walk down the aisle at Hamleys, his eyes wide as he stared at the toys crammed on every shelf. She would fill every inch of floor under the tree they just bought, to watch his reactions as he opened all of them.

She had never looked forward to the season. Losing her parents so close to Christmas always shoved down any happiness, as if celebrating was somehow forgetting their memory. After she left foster care, she didn’t even have to pretend.

Now she had a reason. Two reasons, both of them as excited and jumpy as four-year-olds.

Jackson Kane waved at her from the other end of the aisle, before he pulled out yet another gadget to show Jamie.

Their son.

The thought filled her with a quiet joy, every time.

Watching Kane with him now, gentle and funny, and so loving, had tears stinging her eyes. She had to stop, before she made a complete fool of herself.

Kane. She limped down the aisle, still not used to the glimpses of an unfamiliar London outside the window. We have to go soon. Mac’s expecting us in an hour.

He and Jamie looked up at her, both of them crouched on the floor, exploring the interior of a—was that a spaceship?

Just five more minutes, love. I’m showing Jamie—

Too much too soon.

He glanced down at the spaceship, then over at their son. Jamie looked anxious, and on complete overload. Jamie—

I am all right, sir. He clutched the ship, glancing over at Elizabeth. I would like to hear more about this spook ship.

Spaceship, she said. We’ll have to take that one with us, then.

Truly? Those dark eyes widened as they met hers, the excitement, and the hesitation, tugging at her heart.

Absolutely. Your father will need plenty of time to explain all the details of space. Kane grinned at her, and she wanted to kiss him, for giving her this moment. This beautiful boy. Why don’t you go pay for it? We’ll be right behind you.
