Becoming Spiritually Aware

Once in the midst of time, Jacob’s sons— Judah, Reuben, and Joseph—walked this universe in earthly bodies. Judah and Reuben hated Joseph, often referring to him as the master dreamer. Joseph explained, in great depth, his most revealing dream of the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowing low before him. Judah and Reuben were outraged upon hearing this preposterous tale and set out to rid themselves of this dreamer of dreams.

After devising a scheme, Joseph was sold to Israelite traders for twenty pieces ($11) of silver. Unbeknown, to Juda and Reuben, Joseph was spared and became Pharaoh’s King Servant in Egypt. As the story goes, the brothers did bow low to Joseph during Egypt’s great famine. (Genesis 42:6).

This biblical story is one of many warm, sensitive narratives indicating and answering the question, Why do we dream? The genealogy of Christ, descendant of King David and of Abraham, according to St. Matthew, indicates yet another reason why we dream and, perhaps, the most significant. The virgin birth of Jesus through Mary and the explanation of her fiance, Joseph, illustrates this sovereign power through the following passage, After falling into a deep dream state, an Angel of the Lord appeared unto him. ‘Joseph, son of David,’ the Angel said, ‘do not hesitate to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. She shall bring forth a son and thou shall call his name Jesus, meaning ‘Savior,’ for He will save His people from their sins. (Matthew 1:20-21). The rest is history.
