    Chapter One

    Steve took a break from Minecraft for a couple of days, but, as always, he was drawn back to that strange and fantastical world.  He logged on, comforted to be back amongst the blocky shapes that felt like home.  With the materials he had crafted yesterday, he set about building himself a home.  After an hour or so, and a few false starts and lots of internet searches, a modest but functional house of cheerfully colored pixels lay, framed by mountains, before him. 

    Steve thought about joining his friends in one of their online servers when it happened again.  Spreading out from his PC was a bright whirlpool of light reaching out to him.  Steve tried to move away, but he was dragged into the computer like a luckless sailor to a hungry giant squid.

    Oh God, not again! he said aloud.  Now shoulder-deep inside the monitor, he clung onto the edge of his desk with one hand, while desperately trying to switch the computer off with the other.  Soon all that was left of him were his fingertips, gripping the monitor from out of the screen, then, with a sucking noise like a toothless senior enjoying a mint, they too disappeared.

    Steve didn’t know what to do.  He was stuck in this land for real once again, a prisoner in an angular world so different from his own.  The last time escape was simple; but this time there were no handy exits where he found himself.  He was in one of the mining caves that he had seen before.  It was dark, but a torch was nearby, along with a stone pickaxe.  He grabbed it, searching the gloom for spawned monsters.  Maybe the pick was just a gift from someone who wanted to help him, though how they could have known of his arrival was impossible to guess

    An experienced gamer, Steve knew the best way to find your way out of any underground passage was to follow one wall as far as it would go.  Once outside again, he would then be in a better position to
