About this ebook
Southern Adventures is a travel fiction children’s book series. In the Southern Adventures series, Anna and her family are Cherokee Indians from North Carolina who spend part of every summer traveling throughout the U.S. South. Eight-year-old Anna finds adventure everywhere she goes, and she loves to try to beat her brother, whatever the game. Ten-year-old Carter is a history buff (and a bit of a know-it-all, according to Anna). Together with their parents, they explore each new city while learning about its history, sampling some of the area’s unique food, meeting new people, and, of course, discovering new adventures!
In Book 1, Anna's Trip to Savannah, Anna and her family visit the city of Savannah which is known for its culture, beaches, and as the birthplace of the Girl Scouts. Follow Anna as she discovers unique squares (parks), climbs to the top of a lighthouse, and steers a ship down the river!

Chapter One
Welcome to the Nautical Star,
the doorman says as he lets Anna and her family in the front door of the hotel. Anna immediately likes the hotel’s lobby, which looks like the inside of a ship. It looks so different than anything in her hometown in North Carolina, which is where eight-year-old Anna, her two-years-older brother Carter, and their parents live.
In the lobby, there are large metal stars, paintings of the ocean, and a ship’s wheel on the wood-panel walls. Since Anna and Carter both love pirate movies, this is quickly becoming her favorite hotel. Anna can’t wait to explore Savannah with her brother and dad, even though her mom won’t be able to go to many places. Mom has a conference, so it is a working vacation for her.
Hello. Welcome to Savannah,
a voice says, suddenly close to Anna. She turns around quickly, realizing her parents have walked over to the front desk. The stranger smiles at her over his red-and-black striped bowtie. He is an older man with short black hair and walnut-colored skin that is a few shades darker than Anna who is Cherokee.
My name is Anna, and this is my brother, Carter. Who are you?
Anna responds.
My name is Charles Jones, but you can call me Mr. Charles. I am the concierge here at the hotel. Nice to meet you,
he answers, sticking his hand out.
Anna shakes it. Nice to meet you, Mr. Charles. I like your bow tie. It matches my shirt.
So it does,
Mr. Charles chuckles.
Carter shakes Mr. Charles’ hand and asks, What is a concierge?
Mr. Charles replies, A concierge is someone who helps guests have a great vacation. I got recruited for my current job seein’ as how I knew all of the best places and all the right people. What are y’all plannin’ on doin’ while you’re here? Maybe I can make a suggestion or two.
We’re going to explore the city, but I don’t know what else,
Carter says.
I know we’re going to the beach!
Anna offers.
Anna, you wouldn’t happen to be a Girl Scout, would you?
Mr. Charles asks.
Yes!
Anna replies.
Well, the lady who started the Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low, was born and raised in Savannah. You can visit her house to learn more about her and how she started the Girl Scouts,
Mr. Charles suggests.
Wow, that would be cool,
Anna says. I would have so much to tell my Brownie troop when I get home.
What about a suggestion for me?
Carter asks.
You look like the type of fella that would like the Ships of the Sea Museum,
Mr. Charles offers. You can see lots of paintings and models of ships, many of them used to sail this river.
That sounds like fun,
Carter agrees, since he loves ships and history.
Speakin’ of which, have y’all seen the river yet?
Mr. Charles asks.
No, sir,
Anna and Carter answer. Mr. Charles waves for them to follow him over to a picture window that looks out on to the river. The river itself is really dark, but they can see lights twinkling on both sides of the river. "There
