The silver light of the full moon spilled through the sparse branches of a large tree, full of twists and knots, that stood, like a broken old man, in the middle of a round platform. The shadows cast images on the packed earth, changing every time the wind howled across the main street and rocked the body hanging from the largest branch.
Can we go now?
Kara, holding onto the ridge of the roof, stretched her legs. I'm getting cramps in my legs.
No, not yet, but soon.
Tyne glanced at the men that drunkenly stumbled toward the well-lit building, filled with loud music and chatter. Wait here.
He pushed himself down the roof and as he flew over the edge of it, his feathered coat spread behind him like wings. A few flaps and his boots touched the ground and the coat settled around him. He looked up at his friend, giving her a wave, before he strode into the tavern. As soon as he passed through the door the noise, and smell of sweat and booze, slammed into him.
People crowded around the bar and tables, laughing and patting one another on the back under the soft glow of the lanterns.
The chief is dead,
somebody yelled.
Cups were raised. Long live the chief!
And all eyes turned toward the man with a thin moustache that reminded Tyne of rat's whiskers.
He moved toward the new chief, shaking his head slightly. The people of this village had suffered oppression and pain and when they finally freed themselves, they choose for their leader a man who was infected with the same greed as the one before. Tyne opened himself and the feelings of yellow joy and the purple drunkenness of freedom assaulted
