About this ebook
Are you a fan of Prairie Home Companion? Have you ever thought of going on a pilgrimage to see the towns that Garrison Keillor had in mind when he created his fictional town of Lake Wobegon? If so, I hope you will enjoy this book about a precocious teenager who talks her father into taking her to Minnesota on just such a quest. He wants to go on a Bob Dylan pilgrimage while there, but she has other plans after a "bachelor farmer" (who was last seen at the "Chatterbox Cafe") goes missing and they join the search party. Part travelogue, this book also contains pictures from the writer's trip to "Lake Wobegon".

Reviews for The Missing Bachelor Farmer
1 rating1 review
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This book was an easy read. It had a lot of interesting information in it as Nancy and her dad set off for Lake Wobegon. There is a great and easygoing relationship between Nancy and her dad.
However, there wasn't much of a mystery about the missing bachelor farmer - especially as that is the title of the book. I would have preferred the focus to be on the farmer, and a proper, indepth search for him.1 person found this helpful

Chapter One: Ashes Raining Down
Nancy Keene and her father sat in their backyard painting headstones for Halloween decorations. Nancy, a blue-eyed/blonde-haired fifteen-year-old, found some good epitaphs to paint onto the headstones and was currently painting the words:
Here lies Les Moore
Shot in the head with a 44
No Les, No more.
She and her father lived in Orange County, California and it was 90 degrees outside with strong Santa Ana winds blowing leaves into their swimming pool. Brush fires in the nearby foothills created ashes that rained down on the father and daughter as they painted.
Oh, look Dad. It’s impossible to paint with these ashes sticking to the headstones.
Her father, Drew, a prominent attorney downtown, told her, I think we’re going to have to go inside to continue our painting, honey.
They gathered up the headstones, paint, and brushes and went into their kitchen to lay everything out on the table. Nancy put newspaper on and underneath the table to prevent paint from dripping onto their floor.
You know, Dad, it’s really hard to get into the spirit of the season when it’s this hot outside. I wish we still lived in the Adirondacks. Remember how beautiful the autumn was there?
I know what you mean. I’m sorry we had to move. There were just too many memories of your mother in our New York house. It was too hard for me to stay there after her death.
I understand, Dad. We had to move on, didn’t we?
Are you not happy here in Santa Ana?
Oh, Dad. Don’t worry about me. I’ll get used to it.
You’ve met some nice friends here. I’m sure you’ll all have fun at your Halloween party.
You’re right, Dad. Listen to me complaining. I’m the luckiest girl in the world!
she told him and walked over to give him a big hug. "Let’s listen to A Prairie Home Companion. That always cheers us up." She was referring to the long-running popular radio show on National Public Radio.
They continued their painting project indoors while they listened to the show and laughed at some of Garrison Keillor’s jokes. When the News from Lake Wobegon
portion of the show came on, Nancy and her father stopped what they were doing and sat quietly in their front room listening and hanging on to each word that the storyteller spoke.
Garrison talked about Pastor Liz, Dorothy’s caramel rolls, The Sidetrack Tap, The Chatterbox Café, and the bachelor farmers. When his monologue finished, Nancy decided to light some cinnamon candles that she bought at Bath and Body Shop. She turned on the faux fireplace and tried to feel cozy inside. Still feeling restless, she told her father, Let’s go get some Pumpkin Spice Lattes, Dad. You can teach me how to drive now that I got my learner’s permit.
He had a surprise for her. Speaking of you driving, I’ve been looking at a blue vintage roadster that a friend of mine is selling. I think you’ll like it. It’s a real classic.
Great! When can I see it?
When you turn sixteen.
Is your friend willing to wait that long?
Yes. He owes me a favor.
Awesome,
Nancy said, imagining herself driving her friends to the beach in the summertime.
Nancy and her father headed out to Starbucks, with Nancy in the driver’s seat. She managed to back out of their driveway okay but had trouble getting used to the clutch and shifting. The drive back home was
