About this ebook
A family get-together goes awry when phantoms in the night come out, but were they always there, or is Ken and Carol's daughter the light that drew them out?
Ken's Army duties have moved he and his family from base to base causing his parents to become fearful that their granddaughter was growing too old too fast without them. They have insisted that he make time to bring his wife, Carol, and their three year old, Kat, to stay the long weekend along with his sister, Anna, her husband, Mike, and their four year old, Trisha. Noises and strangers enter in the night causing Ken and Carol to question their daughter's innocence. Was the fact that she wasn't breathing when she was born have some sort of effect on her?

Chapter One
The Hospital
It was early morning, still dark, as Ken sat in the hospital room. A female nurse was informing him on how to read the monitor in front of him. This tracks the baby’s heart beat.
She pointed to the line on the screen, You’ll see it go up and down during the course of labor.
Carol lied on the hospital bed beside him, trying to portray herself as calm during each contraction. There was a silence between them. They had only briefly dated before Carol became pregnant.
Ken kept his idle focus on the blinking machine.
Maybe some TV while we wait?
Carol pleaded with her best pout, still trying to win Ken’s affections and sympathies. He reached to the table behind him and handed her the remote. He didn’t care what her choice was, his mind was racing. Another child? He had already come to his own conclusions; he would try to work things out with Carol into a real relationship. He liked her enough, but he already had two kids from a previous marriage that he barely saw. What if he did the same to this kid? He didn’t want that.
Ken continued to watch his child’s monitor fluctuate. Carol mindlessly flipped through the channels, occasionally eying Ken, but he stayed in his glaze, unseeing her. All she wanted, she thought, was some sort of warmth, some loving words of encouragement; she was scared –of giving birth and of the thought of him leaving.
Normally, she was a shy girl, petite and invisible under curly brown hair. Ken was an attractive muscular, military man; the type of man she longed for, but would usually never look twice at her, but Ken did. Carol believed she would try anything to keep from losing him.
Um…
She heard him say and saw fear grow in his eyes. Ken had watched the heart rate line drop and it had not come back up like before. I’m going to grab the nurse.
Panic fluttered in Carol’s chest. What had he seen?
Moments later, Ken returned with the nurse. After one glance at the monitor she raced back out of the room. I’m sure it’s fine,
he tried to reassure both himself and Carol.
After a few breathless minutes, their doctor, Dr. James Harrelson, and a few other of what Ken assumed were nurses entered. Dr. Harrelson looked at the screen, Ok, Carol, we’re moving you into an operating room right now just down the hall. Please, sir, wait here for a little while.
Five people wheeled a frightened Carol out of the room; she stared at Ken, pleading with her eyes for him to help. He followed the group to just outside of the door and watched them push her through a set of double doors.
In the hall was a small blue plastic chair, he sat and watched for their doctor or nurse to come back so that he may find out what was happening. The intercom above his head chirped and a female’s voice stated, Paging Dr. Conner, please come to floor five operating room. Paging Dr. Conner, please come to floor five operating room.
Ken felt a lump in his throat and a thump in his chest as his heart skipped a beat. Were they ok? He looked either way, but no one came.
He started at the chirp of the intercom again, Paging Dr. Conner, please come to floor five operating room…..
He tried but couldn’t swallow, his hands grew slick with sweat. Hospitals
