About this ebook

As canine shrink Allie Babcock knows, behind every neurotic dog stands a neurotic human. But the rambunctious golden retriever named Maggie can’t even begin to compete with the nuttiness of her owner. Befuddled millionaire Ken Culberson insists that he killed his wife and that Maggie is channeling her spirit. He talks Allie into becoming the dog’s legal guardian in case he, too, should die—which he promptly does, thanks to a murderer.

Friends and relatives immediately gather to sniff after the fortune that will go to whomever Allie picks to be Maggie’s new owner. Wondering who in the pack did the deed, sleuth-hound Allie vows that Maggie and her millions will only go to a killer over her own dead body. . . .

I always enjoy the books in this series because they give me insights into dog psychology. They agree with what I have read elsewhere, so I suspect the author consults with a dog trainer. The mystery is also a good one. It plays fair in that all the clues and actors are on stage from the start. I like the main characters and find their personal lives interesting. If you like dogs and mysteries, then I think you'll enjoy the series.

First, a confession: I’m not an animal lover. I would never select a mystery with a cover that features a dog wearing a bandana. But after reading Give the Dog a Bone, I can see that an avid dog lover would truly enjoy the story and revel in the tidbits of doggie psychology sprinkled throughout. The amateur detective is Allida “Allie” Babcock, a canine therapist in Boulder, Colorado. Boulderites must love their dogs, as Babcock’s practice is thriving. One new client is Ken Culberson, who believes his golden retriever, Maggie, is channeling the spirit of his late ex-wife Mary. Choosing to concentrate on the dog’s many bad habits rather than the supernatural issues, Babcock proceeds to teach both dog and owner some new behaviors. Soon, however, Maggie breaks loose and eventually returns to home carrying bones – human bones if Babcock’s suspicions are correct. That prompts a call to the police, who take Culberson in for questioning, leaving the dog in Babcock’s care. Although he lives in a modest mobile home, it seems Culberson has millions coming in from patents on an invention. Before the police visit, he added a codicil to his will naming Babcock Maggie’s temporary guardian upon his death. He even convinced the police officers to witness his signing of the codicil. The codicil requires that, as the dog’s guardian, Babcock would also decide who among Culberson’s relatives and friends is to care for both Maggie, his sole heir, long term. After returning from the police questioning, Culberson is murdered and Babcock finds herself saddled with an unruly and grieving dog and the huge task of deciding who will get Maggie and the millions.Calling Babcock an amateur detective is a bit of a stretch. Technically, she’s not investigating Culberson’s murder – she’s finding a home for Maggie. But because of the size of Culberson’s estate, many of the potential guardians must also be considered suspects in his murder: psychologist Terry Thames, social worker Rachel Taylor, neighbors Ruby and Yolanda, veterinarian Joanne Palmer, brother Arlen … and an additional suspect who surprises everybody, but whose identity I won’t reveal. When one of the suspects is also murdered, Babcock begins wondering whether the deaths involve more than simple greed. An avid dog lover might say Give the Dog a Bone is a “must read.” Not in that camp, I frequently found myself skimming through sections when the dog detail became too tedious. On the other hand, I liked the character of Allie Babcock. The author fleshed out all the characters nicely and the story was mostly believable. (Two exceptions: Babcock’s boyfriend having a phobia about dogs and a millionaire rewriting his own will.) The writing was smooth, the plot moved along and all the threads were tied together at the conclusion. I found Give the Dog a Bone surprisingly satisfying.
