Here we are, Adam announced, as they reached Rachel's room. It was about eleven p.m. by the time they arrived back. She turned and opened the door.

    Yeah.

So where's your roommate? Adam noticed Kathy's bed was empty as he peered inside.

She's gone to Robert’s tonight I think. She said she's staying out all night.

Oh, Adam nodded nervously. I guess I'll get going... I'll see you tomorrow then? he rambled. Okay well, bye...

Adam? Rachel touched his arm and he felt like he was on fire. He had always been affected by her touch, but now the need for her had consumed him. He missed the way it felt to touch her, to have her touch him.

Yes, Rach? He looked at her hand on his arm and then up at her.

We did a lot of talking tonight. We talked about the past and the things that went wrong. And a little about what we are going to do.

    Yeah.

But we didn't decide anything, Adam.

Adam nodded as he realized that they hadn't in fact decided anything. I know I...

I don't think we need to talk about it anymore though, Rachel stepped forward slightly and closed the distance between them some more.

    What are you saying?

Don't say a word. And then she kissed him.

The kiss was passionate, fueled with heat as they pulled each other close. She wrapped her arms around his neck, and brought him closer to her. He kissed her back, not thinking about anything except the way it felt to hold her again.

They moved further into her room. They tried not to break the contact. Adam kicked the door closed behind them as Rachel pulled away from the kiss to free him from his shirt.

They moved in reckless abandon and only thought about how much they wanted this. Rachel thought that her first time would be scary, but Adam made that feeling vanish with his kiss.

    Chapter 1

Rachel Porter stood still and took in her surroundings. She couldn't quite believe she actually made it out of Marion, Virginia. She stood in her dorm room while boxes of her belongings cluttered the floor, and all she did was stare.

Rachel didn't know quite what to do with herself. She was at Richmond University. Rachel had dreamed of being there since the previous summer, and all she could think about was how much she missed everyone. The person she needed most was Adam Whitlock. Rachel needed him to tell her she would be okay. She needed Adam to tell her that he loved her, and that when things got tough she could always count on him. But, Rachel didn't know where he was or what he was doing.

She knew Adam had finished summer school so that he could graduate. Adam’s grades slipped in the last part of his senior year, so he lacked the credits that he had needed to graduate. She had no clue if he would be joining her at R.U. this semester, even if at all period. He did get a scholarship. But if they would no longer honor that, his dad would help cover the cost of college.

Rachel knew she had messed up, too. Somewhere along the line, things had changed. Maybe she hadn’t shown Adam that he was the most important person to her. She loved her family, but Adam was the one who opened her eyes to life. Maybe it was that they were both too scared of hurting each other. She didn't know exactly what it was; maybe it was everything. Things had changed. Communication between them somehow just stopped.

Rachel stood up and wiped away the single tear that the thought of losing Adam had brought. Marion and Virginia Beach had to be left behind. It was time to start a new life, with or without Adam. But for some reason the last one wasn't so appealing, because leaving Adam wasn't something that she had wanted to do.

I still can't believe I’m actually here, Rachel’s dorm roommate Kathy London said, as she stretched out on her bed. Rachel looked up from the magazine she was reading and rolled her eyes.

Well I don't think it's going to seem real to you unless you actually put your stuff away, Rachel joked. Kathy had still not unpacked all of her things either and cardboard boxes littered her side of the room.

Rachel and Kathy met during orientation. They got to know each other as they brought their boxes in from their parent’s automobiles. The girls had taken a break and had lunch together. They gave each other a brief history lesson of their personal info. It would make things easier since they were to share a dorm room for the foreseeable future.

Don't you feel strange being here sometimes? Kathy sat up and crossed her legs. I mean you've lived in Marion most of your life. I thought college would be like a huge leap for you. At least that’s what I gather from what you told me.

Rachel put the magazine down on Kathy's cluttered desk and stood up. It is. I can't believe I'm here either, but I guess it's weird. I just don't think about it. School is really hectic and it's hard making new friends.

Rachel thought about what Kathy said. Her first week at Richmond University had been quite exciting. Rachel had this whole different life now. She had decided when she got here that she was going to focus on the here and now, not worry about the past. That's what she'd been trying to do.

I just try not to think about last year, Rachel added.

You don't want to think about last year or you don't want to think about a certain someone? Kathy raised her eyebrows in question.

I never said anything about Adam! Rachel shrieked a little too quickly. She hated how Kathy was suddenly able to read her like a book.

I never said anything about Adam either. Kathy looked at her smugly. You know you can tell me what's bothering you. Rachel hesitated before she took a seat next to Kathy on the bed.

It's just that, it's been like 2 weeks since summer school ended...still nothing. Adam should be here by now. He still hasn't contacted me. Rachel sighed. It's not like I'm constantly thinking about Adam or anything. I'm just wondering where he is. He has missed his first week of college, she added.

Sure. Kathy didn't believe her for one second. Maybe he lost your cell phone number. I’m sure he'll be in touch soon and explain the delay, Kathy said as she tried to soothe Rachel.

Anyway, I have a paper that is due Friday. I should start on it now, Rachel started gathering her things for the report.

Rachel... Kathy tried to stop her from
