***
On Christmas morning, Richard Stone was staring at the ceiling of his bedroom, counting a thousand of imaginary sheep. He had tried all night to get some sleep, without success.
It was so cold that he couldn’t even get outside the blanket.
This world is so beautiful… Thank you. Thank you, I know I should be grateful and I am. But this world is so sad. How can it be beautiful and sad, at the same time? There is no meaning… no meaning at all.
With the eyes of his mind, Richard looked back at the beautiful days of summer and fall, that he had spent in that little amazing Ligurian town, Sestri Levante.
In the morning and in the first afternoon h e used to play near the beach, admiring the white boats and yachts in the nice breeze. After that, he spent time in the library.
That place was amazing. He absolutely loved it. It had three floors and really nice people to talk to, huge beautiful rooms full of books and computers, armchairs, colorful painted ceilings… and most of all – it was a great place to hide. To read stories.
I really need to live an authentic existence. I really need to live for myself and for what I believe in
Richard Stone thought again, staring at the grey dirty ceiling until his eyes hurt.
That thought had followed him for a while. An authentic existence.
Three days before, his girlfriend Clara had told him that between them was over.
Her new boyfriend was Brian Gay from the XII A. He was two years older than her, he had blue eyes, liked blue Lacoste shirts and was incredibly good looking- at least, that’s what everybody said about him.
I look much better
Richard mentally replied to everyone.
Asterope street was quiet, while everyone was sharing gifts under a tree in that very cold Christmas morning.
Richard Stone, who lived at the number 12, was ashamed to admit – but in that precise moment, he was very unhappy. Tears were falling down his cheeks. He could not stop them.
He was extremely disappointed.
His best friend and love of his life -Clara- his classmate, had just betrayed him. How could she do something like that? How was that even possible?
Richard thought she was the most beautiful girl in Genova. She had long, black hair and amazing green eyes, and was the most popular girl in school. She always had cool outfits for her amazing body. There was no one like her on earth. When she smiled, everyone around her was smiling too. She could make you happy just by looking into your eyes.
Richard had loved her since the beginning, since she had moved from Florence to Genova. It was love at first sight.
He suddenly discovered to have a heart. He loved and worshipped her. He did everything she wanted, he was always at her feet. Whenever she needed someone- there he was, ready to fulfil all her wishes, to stand by her side and help her with everything.
He couldn’t hide his feelings from her. She always knew. You can’t hide something like that. People have really good sensors. You cannot fool anyone, as much as you try.
Around Easter, she finally accepted to be his girlfriend. It was official.
His girlfriend!!! Richard simply couldn’t believe it. He woke up at night, looked at a picture of them together, near his bed, and still couldn’t believe that Clara Mateotti was his girlfriend.
They had a few ups and downs, but that was normal. They fought a lot, but many couples do. The important thing was that Clara said she loved him. She said that all the time. And acted like she meant it.
She took Richard into her arms and kissed him and declared her love, many times. She sent him poems, at night. Beautiful, deep poems. Sweet words of love. Enthusiastic. True. Sensual. Sincere. Warm.
Clara was a flower that caressed him with her soft, lovely petals. He felt very loved and protected.
They kissed a lot. Clara said he had soft lips. She loved his soft, warm lips.
Richard made her laugh a lot, because he loved her laughter.
Being with Clara was paradise.
But the inevitable happened.
Only three days before Christmas, while the snow was suffocating Genova, his dear Clara left him. Snap. Just like that.
Not much explanation.
Yes, they had a fight. She said Richard was incapable of many things, including giving her gifts and taking her out more often and treating her nicely.
She left him with a WhatsApp message, saying that she had found someone else.
That Brian – guy.
She was sorry, but it seemed obvious that their relationship couldn’t work.
That was it.
Just like that. Snap. A door was closed in Richard’s face.
And his heart broken.
He felt like he wanted to die. Nothing had any meaning any more, in the absence of the one true love of his life.
His sister Sophie said that he was sentimental like a girl, lived outside reality and couldn’t adapt to modern times. It was obvious that Clara never loved him, and only wanted to use him while she was searching for someone else.
It was obvious that a girl like Clara Mateotti would never seriously consider someone like Richard Stone.
This reality that you’re praising so much, it has no meaning
he replied to his sister. People live like robots, they work until they can’t even stand, and after that are so confused that they don’t even know who they are and what is really important to them. They don’t know if they can afford to have feelings. All they have, are big fears. When you think you love someone and that person loves you back, it’s already gone. It’s an illusion. Nothing lasts. Nothing is really worth it. Nothing has a deep meaning. Having a heart is a too expensive price to pay. If you’re not lucky enough to have a pretty face, it just doesn’t matter how smart or good you are, how many books you’ve read or how many things you know by heart. It doesn’t matter what you do for the others. People will judge you, leave you and betray you and despise you in the end. Reality is something that I hate! I hate it! There’s nothing you can do, here. It’s just terrible.
I must try to become someone,
Richard thought that Christmas morning, while staring at the ceiling of his bedroom.
He knew that was a very infantile thought, but he felt like he had no choice.
" If it’s possible that Clara leaves me just before Christmas, then everything is possible. I want to be someone rich. When you’re rich, you’ve got something. Everyone you love and treasure can leave you or die, sooner or later. But if you’re rich, you’re protected. You still have something. You’re not alone and hungry in the rain. You have a butler that serves you dinner. If you’re rich, someone will want you, even if for a stupid reason – like your money."
He thought about it more and more. A writer. Or someone who built houses. Own a business like Amazon. Something. Anything. To get him out of there, out of that narrow house full of spiders, loneliness and despair.
Since nobody loves me and doesn’t want to take care of me and lies to my face, I must earn a lot of money. That will help me.
It wasn’t a bad idea. He thought about it more and more.
Now he knew. Nobody could ever love him. It was obvious. Every time he tried to be with someone, it went wrong. Every time he fell in love, it went wrong.
Some weeks ago, his mother told him that she regretted having him, that she regretted having such a horrible child. In every possible way.
She said: "why did I met the most horrible man in the world, and had the most horrible child with him? Why did I meet your father, from all men on earth? Why did I had to
