    PROLOGUE

The darkness could have made it easier for Nick to shadow his quarry without giving away himself but the moon could be as unpredictable as any living creature, so he stayed as far back as he could without losing his target. It didn't make things any easier.

He slipped a bit on the mud n made a mental note to buy rubber soled shoes for his night activities. Even as he thought of that, he slipped and fell with a thud.

    Nick froze.

He had excellent night vision but he could not be certain the man moving meters ahead of him hadn't heard the noise he made. He squirted and finally decided there was movement away from him.

Breathlessly n testing every foothold, Nick followed his prey. This was the third night he had staked his prey but something was bothering him. The pattern at which the prey was moving seemed the same. The same route. The same time of night to the same hour.

He was being tested. Someone else was playing a dangerous game, and until Nick knew the rules, he had no intention of playing along.

Avoiding the main road, Nick walked stealthily to the shadows of an old building nearby. He was no more than three meters from the building when all his senses screamed a protest that someone was nearby, too close yet he was so vulnerable.

He barely had time to turn around, had only an instant to see the shadowy outline of a man, not too far away, see the gleam of faint light on dark unmistakable steel, and then a sound like a soft sneeze reached his ears in the same moment that Nick made an instinctive effort to push himself away from the building.

He felt the bullet strike its target and the shock caused his legs to buckle and he hit the ground. Hot pain washed over him, pain he tried not to concentrate on as he looked up searching for the man who had driven the the bullet into him.

    Nobody. Nothing.

Nick pressed a hand to his chest and when he brought it closer to his face he could see even in the darkness a wet gleam.

    ''Bloody hell,'' he screamed.

    Chapter 1

Lin was beginning to get tense as the collection of the most expensive and most pimped automobiles were being driven into the show room. She had every reason to be tense because the entire collection
