AN EXPERIENCE IN CHANGE BRIAN HEAD
WHERE DO I START?
______________________________________________________________________________________
That's the question I asked myself 36 years ago
My marriage had broken up, I had lost my successful Jewellery business, I was suffering petit mal (minor epilepsy) attacks frequently, and I was just 31. My doctor had put me on valium. I was without a job. Having worked for myself for the past 10 years, it felt degrading to have to work for someone else.
I made up my mind to become anonymous and migrated to Australia. I had many different jobs and occupations, mainly in the sales field. I had taken with me my only Jewellery tool, a painless ear piercing kit had started a part-time ear piercing service. I called it Simplicity Ear Piercing (after the name of the instrument) in your own home
with my slogan The professional with over 30,000 ears experience
.
It was in 1972, in Canberra, Australia, that I met someone who was to change my life. I was called to a house to pierce a 9 year old girl's ears and her mother told me she would not need any anaesthesia spray to chill the lobes, as the child would hypnotise herself. I remember thinking, well, what if she does scream, her mother was taking the responsibility and I was saving on the expensive freeze spray.
I shall never forget the experience, though I have since witnessed many more serious including my own surgical operation, just a few months in the future. She sat there for about a minute with her eyes closed, then opened them and indicated she was ready. Her composure was that of a mature adult and the operation was as near perfect as you could expect. It only took about 20 minutes for a complete visit and I spent the next 2 hours finding out about the incredible experience I had just witnessed.
I went straight home and told Dianne that I was going to learn self-hypnosis. Her comment was what fool thing have you got yourself involved with this time?
I was first to arrive for the next class being conducted the following Saturday morning, I was full of enthusiasm and misbeliefs about hypnosis which more of which I will cover in following chapters. My first induction into trance was to say the least a disaster, as I was convinced it had to be something else. As I slowly got my act together it dawned on me that it was the ability of being able to focus on what was happening, and what I wanted, that provided the magical results from the use of hypnosis, and as I found out in the following weeks, things did certainly start to change, including Dianne. She joined me on the following class and we had started on a new path of personal growth that was to touch every area of our lives.
I was in car sales at the time, my set target was 12 cars a month and that was exactly what I sold. Within 6 weeks I put my newly acquired self-hypnosis to work with positive affirmations that I was going to sell a car to every customer that came to the lot, and that same weekend I sold 7 cars, with a better quality of sale than previously attained. I went on in my sales experience to sell up to 40 cars a month.
In 1975 I formed my own motor business in Canberra in a unique way selling for the elite Diplomatic and Military personnel, my customers did not know about my self-hypnosis ability, because the success in selling was in me, not the product, though you must believe in what you are selling, it's not the economic timing, its the belief you have in yourself to sell or achieve the results, that is critical to your success.
I have not taught or lectured in hypnosis anything that I have not used or experienced myself. Twelve months after learning self-hypnosis I had a surgical vasectomy while in self-hypnotised anaesthesia, with total control during and after the operation.
I had no idea of the far-reaching implications it would have. One of the first things I learned was that I could actually communicate with myself subconsciously and talk to the petit-mal. I learned that I was creating the attack, which was normally stress or memory related. I found that often the disorientation would come on when I was doing something I had done before. I found I could take a moment, much like an asthmatic with an inhaler, and talk to myself. Over a short period of time the intensity and frequency of the attacks diminished until they finally stopped altogether. It is now more than twenty years since I had my last attack.
Charles Tebbitts in his book Self Hypnosis and other Mind Expanding Ideas
writes that he has witnessed many incredible results from hypnosis and the most memorable was his own rapid recovery from a severe stroke.
We too found that out very early in our own experience, one Sunday night in October 1975 we were returning from Sydney at around 8.00pm, Dianne was driving our VW. camper van, when rounding a corner on the Hume Highway she drove head on into a stalled semi-trailer sideways across the highway, thanks to Aussie bull bars I had fitted to the front of the camper her injuries were reduced to two broken femurs in her legs and some internal injuries, the boys and I were asleep in the back and did not suffer anything more than bruises and shock.
Dianne was transferred to Canberra Hospital to be operated on by an Orthopaedic surgeon, he inserted Krushener Nails (stainless steel rods) in both thighs, with one femur being broken in two places, he told her that she would be over 3 months before she would be back on her feet again and to change any Christmas plans as she would be celebrating Christmas day in hospital, as with two broken legs she would not be able to support herself and it could be up to 6 months of hard work back to normality
Dianne who had to that time treated self-hypnosis with a casual attitude, found she had the tools to work on a very real purpose, that was to be out of hospital before Christmas and to enjoy the summer holidays with us at Merrimbula on the South Coast of New South Wales in our new camper van that replaced the totalled VW.
She told her doctor that she was going home for Christmas which he said after, was a good attitude to have, but dismissed it as near impossible based on the similar cases he had worked with, Di and I worked with suggestion and determination in recovery and pain control which we have since witnessed many times in the past 20 years, to the point where the Dr. stated in early December that if she kept up the amazing progress she would be home for Christmas. On the 23rd of December Di was discharged from Canberra Hospital, to plan our very enjoyable holiday on the beach at Merrimbula, she had the nails removed some two year on which she still has as souvenirs and apart from the operation scars, no disabilities whatever, we now know and witness that using suggestion post hypnotically recovery is less than half the normal time.
We returned to New Zealand in 1978 having in 6 years re-established ourselves securely and financially, we bought a hobby farm just North of Auckland and raised our 2 boys in a country atmosphere with their ponies with which they competed successfully in the various clubs around the district, I also taught the boys self-hypnosis to assist in their riding competence and most of all when they fell off which was quite frequently in jumping events.
They had the ability to become Rag Dolls
before they hit the ground and did not suffer any injuries whatever in 5 years of competition, some 3 years on Paul, our eldest son had traded his horse for a motor cycle, was involved one evening in a collision with a car and was catapulted over 60 feet through air on to the highway, witnesses stated he hit the ground, rolled and got up, he fell over again with his only injury being a broken bone in his left foot and 2 cracked ribs he was kept in hospital for the night for observation and discharged next morning with his leg in plaster.
In 1983 I enrolled on a goal setting programme. Thinking about these goals and writing them down finally made it clear to me that I wanted to work in the field of hypnosis. Apart from my own self-hypnosis I'd had no practical training in the field. As there was nothing available in New Zealand, I went to America in February 1984 and trained with the legendary Gil Boyne who is recognised around the world as being the Master Teacher of hypnosis.
I returned home with good basic techniques and great enthusiasm as only Boyne can convey in his teaching. Since then I've been back every year for more advanced training. This paid off, and today my wife, Dianne, and I are working very happily teaching, we believe the most successful self-hypnosis program in the world today.
A lot of the credit for writing this book must also go to our friend and mentor Bob Proctor International Motivator and author of Born Rich
as he has never let me rest on completing this manuscript through his urging and constructive input, I am grateful for his encouraging comments he has written in the introduction.
Despite tempting offers from overseas, I prefer to remain based in New Zealand. We go overseas every year and have worked in The US, London, Canada, Singapore, Australia and the Pacific. However, in New Zealand at this time, there is more than enough work to keep us extremely busy and fulfilled.

WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?
_____________________________________________________________________________
The question most often asked
The most constant thing in life is change, and most of us are not equipped to accept that change. This could be a change of job, change of life-style, change in health, and so on. Technology is bringing about this change in an incredible way. Just think of the changes that the facsimile machine alone has brought about. With our courses we are helping a tremendous number of people to accept change in their lives.
Simply by learning the simple technique of self-hypnosis, people are regaining control of their own lives. All sorts of people are learning these techniques, not only to control stress, but to be more effective. A good example is Sandy Barwick, the world champion Ultra Marathon athlete. I have helped her to mentally concentrate on her running.
A few people, probably less than three per cent of the population, are doing this already. They don't recognise it as hypnosis, but they have developed the ability to go inside themselves and be in control, rather than being controlled.
Your body is simply the expression of your mind. You have some 60,000 thoughts a day, and each one has to be expressed through your body. These thoughts are expressed as energy, such as enthusiasm or excitement. unfortunately, they can be expressed just as easily as anxiety or depression.
