    Chapter One: Introduction

    Wise Children by Angela Carter was first published in 1991. It was the last novel written by the author.

    The story of the novel revolves around the fortunes of Dora and Nora Chance, twin chorus girls and their strange theatrical family.

    The novel very deeply explores the subversive nature of fatherhood. Dora and Nora happen to be denied of the fatherhood, and consequently they move towards illegitimate lechery which is quite frivolous.

    The novel has a very strong presence of magical realism. The readers’ expectations of reality and society are quite dramatically twisted.
