Taken in the Dark, Part 4: His Embrace

How did you even know about this? Genevieve asked as she wriggled through the narrow vent to join Sarah in a maintenance shaft that was hardly big enough for them to turn around in. Sarah pulled the grate shut behind them and crawled a few feet to where the shaft turned sharply upward.

I heard a couple of people talking about these shafts when I was wandering the halls one day. I overheard a lot I probably shouldn’t have. Then I asked Ivan about them and he said they’d been left as a back–up to a back-up emergency plan. You know, in case plan A through X didn’t work out, they still had plans Y and Z. She tested the ladder, glad it was in pristine shape just like the rest of the shafts. Come on. And be quiet. We should be able to get all the way to the staging area and listen in on what’s going on.

They crept through the maze of tunnels, occasionally whispering as they tried to figure out which direction to go. Sarah pressed close to the grate trying to get a good look around. Her heart nearly stopped when she realized Ivan was standing right next to the grate. She jerked back and pressed a finger to her lips to tell Genevieve to be quiet, even though neither of them had been making any sound other than breathing. She saw someone pass by the grate, and they caught snatches of the whispered conversation—including their names. She recognized the sound of Ivan’s footsteps as he walked away from the wall, a certain amount of urgency in his steps. She inched closer to the grate again, watching as Ivan moved across the room to where Jackson was chatting with the director. The pair moved away to have a little privacy. She could tell by the way Ivan moved that he was worried, and it pained her a bit to know that she was part of the cause.

All the same, she was determined to go through with their plan. Still, this seemed like a good time to try and catch Ivan and convince him to diffuse any panic that might come up because of their absence, and then get him to help them find Jennifer. She shooed Genevieve back along the shaft, toward her room. She knew he was going to look for her, so mission
