Mr. Reed? Fran's voice crackled over the intercom. Elise Aspland is here for your four o'clock appointment. She's a bit early but asked if she could see you.

A smile twitched at the corner of his lips. He suppressed it. Monthly meetings with Elise were a highlight on his calendar, but it wouldn't do to let her know that. That's fine, Fran, tell her to come in.

Marcus stood and shrugged into his suit jacket in one fluid, hasty movement. He stepped around the desk and went to the two interview chairs, dragging one of them to the center of the room. When a tentative knock sounded at his door he was ready. In, he said in a sharp, authoritative voice.

The woman that entered his office was in her late thirties. Her blonde hair was cut into a sharp bob. She wore little makeup, but had the presence and air of someone more than capable. In fact, he knew her reputation as an über bitch. Elise Aspland knew everything that was happening, not just in the branch she ran in Seattle, but in every other notable advertising firm in that city. She knew the competition—their strengths, their weaknesses, who their happy clients were and who could be seduced over to Reed Group.
