Getting Started
Introduction
You have no idea where to even begin. Your friend has one, you hear about them on the news, and you’re pretty sure your nephew just got banned from one but you’re not sure why… so what is a blog?
The word blog
is a hybrid word for the term web log.
Think of it like an online, public journal. The author writes journal entries and other people can read it. A blog differs from a website in that it revolves around continuous posting versus static information. To continue the metaphor, if a blog is like a journal then a website is like a pamphlet.
People will blog for a variety of reasons. They can be used for their original purpose and simply be a way of keeping track of thoughts on the computer. Blog entries can be an easy way to stay in touch with family that doesn’t live close by. Or if you happen to know a lot about a particular topic they can become a great way to share this information with an online community.
But before going any further into the blogging world it’s absolutely essential that you’re very clear about one particular point: blogs take work.
Blogs are easy to start but if your goal is to have people outside of your immediate family find and read your posts they take lots of work. Therefore it’s important to realize what your expectations are for your blog. How much do you care about others finding your work?
Knowing your expectations before you even write your first post can take quite a bit of pressure out of the experience. Blogging can be a fun and rewarding pastime but just like any hobby it takes time to become proficient. The sheer fact that a blog is on the Internet does not mean that thousands of people will suddenly flock to your site.
If I haven’t scared you away yet with that warning then I would say you are ready to give blogging a chance. Welcome to the club!
The purpose of this manual is to give you an overview on large-scale concepts that the average non-blogger does not know but as a blogger you will need to understand. This manual will not cover mundane details such as which button does what when you’re on your blog’s home screen. There are hundreds of tutorials that you can find online that explain exactly that.
The topics that I have chosen to cover are areas that I wish someone had explained to me when I was first started blogging. While the sections are short, I recommend giving yourself some time between reading each of them as they help shape your bigger picture on blogging.
So let’s get started!
The First Steps
After deciding that you want to blog, your first major decision is going to be where to start writing. You have two choices:
1) Build your blog entirely from scratch or
2) Use a blog host
A blog can be free if you use a blog host (so it's like an apartment,
