Celebrity Space
Dan Cooper knew he should just be grateful for a job. Not many had been so fortunate. But the idea of going into outer space made him feel sick.
Your job will be simple,
his new boss had said. The commercial shuttle is on automatic pilot. All you have to do is enforce basic safety on the shuttle trip, help the passengers load their luggage and then unload once they get there.
This particular shuttle had already made hundreds of successful runs to the world’s first space hotel, Moonwalk. Celebrities paid obscene prices for a chance to party in space. So there was no way the company would overlook any safety feature.
Since chances of an error on the shuttle were so slim, they did not even need to hire a worker with mechanical or flying experience. Dan was hired because they did not have to pay him much and he did not get motion sickness.

The training course for Dan’s job lasted three weeks. During that time he was instructed on launch procedure, basic safety and the rules aboard the shuttle that he had to enforce. As former Navy man, these regulations were routine if not a little beneath his abilities.
Navy life had suited him. Dan had enlisted as soon as he had turned eighteen. Coming from a poor family in a small town, getting paid to travel the world had seemed like a dream come true. He had found a certain peace in the structured Navy life.
His career had abruptly come to a close. He and his crew mates had decided to pop a few pills as they headed out for their shore leave. When they arrived back at their boat with the intention of sleeping off the effects of their night, their Commanding Officer had just decided to issue a random drug test. He was immediately discharged.
Like a stray without a home, he had wandered aimlessly for several years from job to job. When his application for the spaceport had been accepted, he felt a small glimmer of hope. Perhaps this job would give back what he had lost.
****
The morning air was crisp on the launch pad. He watched as the passengers got out of the bus. There were five of them. He recognized the blond female from a recent movie. She was holding hands with the quarterback from the team that had just won the Superbowl. There was the doctor who was becoming famous for her work in human genetics. The other two men he did not recognize but he remembered seeing on a list somewhere that they were singers.
The passengers ignored Dan as he quickly loaded their bags in the cargo bay. He signaled to the other workers outside that the shuttle was ready for takeoff then climbed into the shuttle. He heard the door shut and lock behind him. No turning back now.
He quickly made sure everyone was buckled in and then he strapped himself into his seat. Everyone heard an automated voice announce the countdown. The takeoff was unlike anything he had ever experienced before. No roller coaster could even compare. Enormous amounts of pressure, like his body was refusing to leave the world behind him. Then, just before it became too much to handle, there was a brief moment of weightlessness and the artificial gravity
