Confessions of a Dead Man - King B
Chapter Two
Not too long after we met Gayle we started rehearsing at her house. She said she wanted to help us polish our skills before we went over to meet Gary Davis.
One day she called a meeting at her house. When I got there I was the only one of the guys there. She said she had called all of us and cancelled but I never received the call.
When she came to answer the door she was visibly shaken. Her hair, which was usually perfectly done, was all over her head and she looked as if she had been crying.
Manoshua, what are you doing here?
she said as she tried to pull herself together.
We had a meeting.
I said trying to act as if nothing was wrong.
I called to cancel. I left you a message.
I didn’t get the message. Is everything ok?
Yea, I just don’t feel so good.
Is there anything I can do?
No thanks.
Ok. Well. I’ll be going. You’ll call when you want to reschedule?
Sure.
Bye.
I said as I started down the stairs.
Manoshua.
Yes.
Do you mind coming in for a second?
I turned around and entered her place. Immediately I was greeted by the sweet smell of burning vanilla incense. The lights were dimmed and there were lit candles everywhere. The scene was straight out of a romance novel.
I had a networking event scheduled for this evening that I was supposed to attend with my boyfriend, so I thought we would have a little romantic dinner before we went. He had other plans.
mumbled Gayle as she offered me a seat.
What were those, if you don’t mind me asking?
To dump me.
Stunned, I replied, I’m sorry.
"Don’t be. I saw it coming. Things haven’t been good for a while. I thought by doing something romantic I could rekindle something. I guess it was too little too late. As she is talking the oven beeps.
Shit, what am I going to do with all of that food?"
Eat it.
I simply offered.
I’m not going to eat all of that.
I know. I didn’t intent for you to.
Ok
she says as she starts to smile.
The food was impeccable and by the end of dinner we were laughing and joking like old friends. We sat on the couch and continued the conversation when Gayle remembered that she had a special
cognac that she was saving for a special occasion.
I’m not sure this qualifies as a special occasion.
I naively interjected.
Why not? I think you’re special.
she says as she pours the dark golden elixir. Don’t you think I’m special?
Yes, but…
Well, two special friends getting together, shouldn’t that be regarded as a special occasion?
Well if you look at it that way…
Let’s look at it that way
her demeanor began to change. She started walking with that walk that hypnotized me when I first saw her. Suddenly, I wasn’t there to console her anymore. I wanted her. She was wearing a t-shirt and some old ripped jeans and couldn’t have been sexier.
On about the third drink I started to feel myself. I looked Gayle in her eyes and said, That dude was a fool
, referring to her now ex-boyfriend.
Why?
she replied as she gently placed her hand on my thigh.
A chill rushed up my leg and devoured my spine. If I had someone like you I would love you forever.
Dead silence.
What?
Oh I meant…
I said trying to put the shit back into the horse.
I know what you meant.
And before I could make an excuse for my behavior she leaned over and kissed me ever so softly on the lips. I was stiff as a log, yea, there too. She started unbuttoning my shirt, my body quivering with anticipation at the release of each button. I swear to you that this wasn’t my first time but I felt like it was. I was a virgin to this level of sex.
She opened my shirt, placed her finger in the cognac and slowly drew a straight line on my neck. Then she licked the cognac off seducing me with the very touch of her warm, moist tongue. It must have gotten good to her because she dipped her middle finger in the cognac again. This time she saw fit to gently massage my left nipple with her finger followed by her mouth. She was in total control and she knew it. She took off my shirt, halfway unbuckled my belt, and led me into her bedroom with it like a dog on a leash.
The love making session went on passionately for hours. It was the best meeting we never had.
Rule number one. You never let pussy cloud your judgment.
says Gary back at the café. As long as you are in this business hoes will be throwing themselves at you left and right. Take full advantage of that. But don’t ever let that affect business.
Gayle didn’t get me because we were sleeping together. Gayle got me because I didn’t know about copyrights.
That’s true, but you still let her get to you because you were sleeping with her.
No I didn’t?
I said defiantly
What was that depression about?
Gary countered.
You would be depressed too if you got beat for millions.
Yea, but I would get right back on the horse and make me some money. You already knew your songs would sell. So what you learned about copyrights the hard way? Charge it to the game and keep it movin’. No, you wanted to get out of the business for good, because you were in love.
Bullshit!
He was right again. I just didn’t want him to know that.
Chapter Three
I was lying in bed with Gayle, dripping with sweat, after one of our marathon love making sessions. Gayle reaches over to the night stand. She slides a cigarette out of the gold plated casing she housed her cigarettes in. She grabbed the lighter off of the night stand and lit up. She quickly rolled back into a comfortable position in the bed.
Damn, that was nice.
she sighs.
Very nice.
I replied.
Are you trying to make me fall in love with you?
Why do you ask that?
Because if you keep on like that, you just might.
That wouldn’t be so bad, would it?
Not at all.
she pauses, Manoshua.
Yes.
What do you think about going solo?
What?!
"Solo, you know, you singing by yourself…
I know what solo means.
I interrupted The guys are my friends.
They may remain your friends. But you are the real talent. You sing lead, you write the songs…
Yea, but we are a team.
Ok, well, they could be your background singers.
Well if they can be my background singers why can’t we remain a group?
You can. I’m just not sure Gary would be interested in the group.
, she says as she puts out the cigarette.
Why, did Gary say something?
No.
she pauses, But I do know what Gary looks for. The other guys aren’t it. Why do you think I haven’t brought you all in to meet him yet?
The guys have been asking me about that.
Look, I like the guys too, but this is business. They can’t cut it.
I don’t know if I can do it without them.
Ok, look, I’ll put you in front of Gary like I said I would, but I can’t work with the group anymore.
Why not?!
I exclaimed.
Because the group is shit, Manoshua!
, she paused again. I can get you in our local talent showcase. You should do some of your original songs. Gary will be there.
So why can’t you still work with us?
Because it will seem like you all are my group.
And…
And I have a reputation to uphold. I love you, but business is business.
You love me?
Gayle hesitates Yes, I do.
Immediately, all discussion of business went out of the window. I leaned in to kiss her, which sparked another marathon.
The next day, I met up with the rest of the guys at Lance’s place. It was a little studio apartment, off campus, nothing special. We didn’t have much money, hell, we were college students. We were sitting around eating pizza and watching a football game when dumb ass Tom brought up the subject I had been trying to avoid all day.
So what’s up with Gayle?
Tom blurts out just before stuffing his face with another slice of pizza.
What do you mean?
I replied.
A muffled version of, You know what I mean?
came from Tom, obstructed by the wad of pizza he was chewing on.
Yea man, what’s up with her? When is she going to take us to see Gary?
joins in Bubba.
Yea, cause I’m tired of going over there for rehearsals and no results.
Lance contributed.
Well, Gayle is going to arrange for us to perform at their local talent showcase.
I countered.
I thought she was going to take us to see Davis in person.
says Lance.
Well…
I said as I tried to think of a comeback.
Is Davis going to be there?
asks Bubba.
Yea.
I answered
Well, then who cares?
Tom fits in between pizza slices.
How many other groups are going to be there?
says Lance.
I don’t know.
I replied.
Well what songs does Gayle want us to sing?
Lance inquires further.
It’s up to us, but she did say we should come up with about five original tunes. So, I have written some hot new joints.
I said hoping they wouldn’t ask me…
So, when do we go back over to Gayle’s?
asks Tom.
…that question.
Well see, here is the thing. Gayle doesn’t want it to look like she gave us an unfair advantage over the other artists by continuing to help us so much. She could get into trouble at work. So she is going to tell me what she thinks we should work on and I will bring it back, for us to work on.
I said, again praying that this lie would be sufficient.
Dead silence.
Run, go, go!
Bubba yells to the television.
The lie worked. They didn’t ask me anything else about Gayle, except the usual questions about how great it was to be sleeping with an older woman. That was the first time I felt compelled to lie about music business, but it wouldn’t be the last time. I built my entire empire on lies, deceit, and underhanded practices. As much as I hated Gary Davis, in the end, I turned into a much more ruthless version of him. Why? Because it worked! The things he told me at that café were true, sad, but true.
Look, you are a smart kid. But even some of the smartest people in this business get taken advantage of. This is a chess game. ‘Everybody in the business is out to get everybody else in the business.’ Now realistically that’s not completely true. However, if you handle business as if that statement were true, you will greatly decrease your propensity for being taken advantage of.
Gary proclaimed.
After that statement I stopped protesting the meeting. I decided I was going to take this clown for every bit of knowledge I could get out of him. And I would use it to make sure no one ever got me again. I would be made out of steel. No one would make a fool out of me like Gayle did, ever again.
Chapter Four
We ended up doing the showcase and we rocked. Donna came and she was looking absolutely gorgeous. We had been working together off and on since the talent show. We couldn’t do too much however, she was signed and Sexy was getting ready to put out an album. Their first single was on the radio and it was red hot, while I was busy trying to get a record deal. So we got together when we could. We became good friends though. I was still attracted to her but I never really let on. She came to the showcase to support me and I’m glad she was there. She is probably the only reason why I didn’t catch a case that night.
I was backstage scoping out the competition, while the other brothers in the Crooners
were somewhere goofing off as usual. There was only one group in front of us. I watched as they went on stage. They were another four guy group but they had nothing on us. They couldn’t carry a tune across the street in a bucket. Plus, they weren’t as fly as we, so I went back to find the rest of the guys. As I was walking up on the room where they were, I heard the guys talking to Donna.
Well I think I should tell him.
says Lance adamantly.
I agree but I know Manoshua. Just wait till after the performance to tell him.
replied Donna.
Tell me what?
I said as I walked into the room.
Manoshua!
Tom blurts out.
Yea, tell me what?
I repeated.
Manoshua, you look great.
Donna says trying to divert my attention.
Cut the crap, what is it?
I was beginning to worry.
I don’t know how to tell you this.
Lance hesitates.
Just say it!
I yelled.
Gayle just showed up.
, Lance offered
Ok.
, I replied waiting for him to get on with it.
With another guy.
says Lance
Who is he?
I asked calmly.
I don’t know.
Lance nervously replies
He is probably a label rep.
I said trying to offer an explanation
Well…
Lance paused, …they were all over each other.
I stood there a daze.
Manoshua…
Donna said cautiously.
Where is she?
I said with a demonic voice.
And like clockwork the stage manager comes rushing back to where we were and says, There you are. You guys are up next.
Fuck that, where is she?!
I yelled.
Manoshua!
Donna grabbed me, Focus. You have to do this. You and me at the awards remember?
Donna always knew just what to say.
I took a deep breath, looked in Donna’s eyes and before I got lost in them I grunted, "Let’s
