Dragon Treasure
By F.I. Goldhaber
The dark shadow floated over Lis-Orna and she looked up to see a long, winged silhouette blocking the sun. She screamed and ran, dropping the heavy waterskin that weighed her down. Kicking up dust, she darted across the red dirt and scooped up her little sister.
Obsidian-like talons closed around Lis-Orna’s waist. With a wail, she let Lis-Anta slip from her grasp then cried out in pain. The frightened child had bitten her hand.
Although Lis-Orna twisted and tried to slip free, her feet just kicked air. The ground receded so quickly her stomach seemed to stay with the howling child. Sobbing, she shoved at the three talons that crossed under her breasts, but her damp hands slipped off the slick surface. She could feel the scales of the dragon’s chest pressing into her back through the thin fabric of her aropo. The monstrous wings pushed hot air past her tear-streaked face. The slow rhythmic beating echoed in her ears and countered the frantic pounding of her heart. Below, she could see the adobe hovels of the slave quarters that ringed the red sandstone walls of the city. From the fields and the work buildings, other Owejo shouted at the dragon, shaking their fists, waving hoes and shovels in frustration. Lis-Orna reached out to them, but no one could save her. Someone picked up her sister. From
