About this ebook

Do you struggle with the idea of a daily prayer life? Have you ever found yourself asking along with the disciples, "Lord, teach us to pray"? Then this book is for you. Let us join the disciples as we sit at Jesus' feet and join Him in prayer. . . for an entire year.

It is important to realize that The Lord's Prayer is not a recipe for answered prayer.  Rather, it is a recipe for increased relationship with the One Who desires to answer our prayers.  There is a very specific order in which Christ says we should approach God the Father.  This order, if followed, brings the child of God into a place of gratitude, humility, and reverence.  It seeks to bring the heart of the prayerful one into alignment with what beats God's heart and it moves the Christian to put feet to their prayer life.

It is my desire as you go through the coming year with me, that you'll gain a practical, living understanding and personal experiencial insight into the realm of prayer that will lift you above the materialistic tendencies; above the selfish motives; above the need for instant gratification and attention, and into the realm of God's heart not just for you, but for those around you; not just for your own issues and needs, but those around you, and lastly, that you will experience the richness of just "being" in His presence.

THANK YOU

This particular book wouldn't be possible without Jesus Christ Himself choosing to take time out of a busy day to answer His disciples when they asked, Lord, teach us to pray. Thank you Lord for answering that question. Because of You, we are able to develop that close relationship that You have with the Father.

MORE FROM THIS AUTHOR:

A Year in Prayer With Jesus

INTRODUCTION

The Sermon on the Mount. . . Matthew chapters 5 – 7, could be described as Christ's dissertation on how the one who follows Him will live and carry out their daily activities. While the Apostle Paul at that time was Saul the Pharisee, he would echo Christ's teachings quite decidedly in the years to come through his various letters to the churches across the region.

Included in Christ's dissertation that day, was a talk on how to pray. Prayer in the life of a Jew was very much part of everyday life. The more devout the Jew, the more they prayed. This was particularly true of the Pharisees who not only thought it important to pray, but important to be seen while doing so. Piety was deemed something to be flaunted, rather than hidden under the cloak of humility.

Fast forward 2000+ years into our time period, and we still have people and clergy thinking it necessary that everyone knows their piousness. The need for long public prayers eloquently spoken in loud, solemn voices is somehow evidence of that person's elevation above the common man and an indication of how he has God's attention. This behaviour can be seen anywhere from the pulpit to the prayer room. But does it truly show the piety of the person praying? Do they really have that much of an in with God?

If we take Christ's words at face value, the answer is NO!

Matthew 6:5-8 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. 7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

So if the wordy prayers are out, if we are not to pray in a manner that showcases our pride, and if God already knows what we need before we ask, then how exactly do we pray? What exactly, do we pray for? Both of these questions are given to us in the form of The Lord's Prayer.

I grew up beside the ocean and often heard the saying, God can't steer a berthed ship. If the concept of being in prayer does not move a person to action in some way, then the relationship with God is mere talk, empty words. Telling someone you love them without showing it through some beneficial behaviour eventually causes the person to question if you truly love them or not. In this manner, God is no different. Entering His throne room to talk, but never taking action causes God to wonder if we really take what He says to heart. The person who is always complaining about a situation but never taking action is generally considered a complainer and a whiner by others because they won't lift a finger to be part of the solution. God is looking for people to be part of the solution. God assumes that if you bring some issue before Him, that you must be willing to take part in some way in that issue's solution. Prayer has feet, and Christ's example prayer shows us this in plain language.

Keeping in mind that The Lord's Prayer is not a recipe for answered prayer, it must be mentioned that the reverence and respect Christ teaches here echoes His own teachings later on in the same chapter. For many, the focus in prayer is on themselves, on what they want, on what they think they need, on how they feel a situation should be handled, etcetera.

Praying this way is actually quite selfish and leaves no room for God to move in His own sovereign will. Many of the formulae taught in prayer workshops are aimed at getting precisely what the pray-er wants, rather than what God wants. The idea of seeking what God desires is not only foreign, but contrary to the name-it-claim-it and word faith teachings still going around out there.

My Pastor once referred to this mindset as having a business relationship with God. I would go one step further to calling it a consumerism or materialistic relationship with God. The business mantra What's in it for me? places me squarely up front and centre, with God standing outside the circle dressed in servant whites seemingly waiting on the next demand by Sir Lord and Lady Human. The common analogy is that of treating God like the proverbial genie in the sky, or as I often refer to the concept, a slot machine in the clouds. Pull the lever and pray you get the jackpot!

A person coming to The Lord's Prayer with a self-centred focus will tend to focus on the give me bits and skim over the Your will be done bits. Consequently, in today's society, truly coming to an understanding of the nature of this prayer is a challenge. This prayer takes the focus off the person and places it on God. It turns the concept of prayer into a conversation and a respectful conversation at that. It turns the concept of a prayer closet into intimate alone-time with just you and the Lover of your soul spending time in each other's presence, talking about what is on your hearts, etcetera. This is a prayer of relationship.

It is my desire as you go through the coming year with me, that you'll gain a practical, living understanding and personal experience into the realm of prayer that will lift you above the materialistic tendencies; above the selfish motives; above the need for instant gratification and attention, and into the realm of God's heart not just for you, but for those around you; not just for your own issues and needs, but those around you, and lastly, that you will experience the richness of just being in His presence.

It is my intention to have a different Scripture available for each point in Christ's outline, each day. Doing this will offer you further insight into what God's Word says on the subject, allowing you to pray more knowledgeably and granting you opportunity to pray the Scriptures should you choose.

Each point, whenever possible, will contain suggestions as to what you might pray for throughout the year.

Needless to say, don't count on this being a quick read every day. Also don't count on your trip through the points to very quick either. I see things on the Internet offering 1 minute Bible Studies, 5 minute Bible Studies, take just 10 minutes out of your day for. . . etcetera. Before we even begin, let me break all stereotypes and challenge you. . . no. . . I DARE you to attempt keeping each point in Christ's outline to just 5 minutes! I guarantee you this isn't possible in a group setting for sure! Now at first, some of those points you'll be hard-pressed to cover in 2 minutes, let alone 5. But before you know it, you'll have broken the dare and failed the challenge because it's just not possible to do each point adequate justice in only 5 minutes per point. My daughter plays a video game that tells the player up front, You will fail. You may think you can win, but you will fail. But I can't think of any proposition better suited to failure than the inability to take just one point in The Lord's Prayer and do it justice as you grow in your relationship with Jesus Christ. There can be no more glorious a falling short, than to have discovered that you just spent 15 minutes on Our Father, hallowed be Your name, totally revelling in that closeness experienced when you draw near to God and God draw near to you!

Now I'm not issuing this challenge to get readers to start comparing with each other. The goal is not to turn everyone into pious Pharisees again. Remember, Christ said to do this in secret. No one but you and Him will know you failed my challenge, but neither of you will care either. You'll be too wrapped up in who He is to even bother with it. The best part, is that you are both sharing together. If you read these verses before, during or after you cover each point in the outline, you'll be giving God a chance to speak to you, creating the two-way street we usually call communication between people, but that we call prayer between you and God. Prayer is really meant to be a conversation. Communication is vital to any relationship, most importantly your relationship with God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will illuminate God's Word to you, applying it to situations in your life right when you need it. You might even choose to go one step further, and pick one of that day's verses to memorize. Perhaps the verse that spoke to you most directly will be the one you commit to heart.

Alright then, time to find that spot in your home where you relax or find tranquillity the easiest. It might be your living room, the sun room, the covered deck, the breakfast nook, your bedroom or the den. If possible, remove any potential distractions from that space. Leave your cell phone in the other room, turn off the monitor on the computer, turn the digital photo frame around for the time you are in the room praying, etc. Next, pick a time of day when you can be uninterrupted for awhile. Perhaps tell your family that you'll be unavailable at a certain time of day and please don't bother you unless someone is dying.

Make yourself a cup of tea or your favourite beverage. Grab a notepad, notebook, or your tablet with the note app loaded, grab your Bible if you prefer to read each verse in your favourite translation, make yourself comfortable. . .

. . . and let's dive in!

Oh! One more thing. Before we launch into how to use this book . . the pages will not have dates on them, just numbers from 1 to 365. This is to allow anyone to begin at any time of the year without feeling like they need to catch up at any point. In addition, each day's session is spread across two pages.

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK:

On your first flip-through of this book, you'll discover it is generally following the same pattern from one day to the next. This is because human beings are creatures of habit, and God Himself has repeatedly encouraged the creation of healthy habits in Scripture. So each day's prayer session is following the same outline.

Another observation is the use of Scripture verses for each point throughout the year. It has been this author's goal to ensure that no two Scriptures will appear twice in this book!

This book can consequently be read in the following ways:

Take each day's outline and pray through the Scriptures and suggested prayer notes. Have a notebook nearby to write down prayer points as they come to you. Remember the challenge offered earlier.

Read each day's Scriptures first, asking the Holy Spirit to speak to you as you read, perhaps even opening those verses in your favourite translation as well. Then spend some time praying through the outline and suggested prayer points.

For a different adventure, flip through the book only reading one particular point's Scriptures from Day One to Day 365. (reading all Scriptures shared for hallowed be thy name for example) You'll discover in reading the book this way, that some passages have been quoted, their verses having been interspersed among other verses or sometimes appearing all together, and may be worth your time doing more personal study on.

For the purposes of this book and the author's own preference, the 1776 Authorized King James Version has been used. Any time you come across a word or phrase that seems archaic to you, use that as a springboard to further Bible study by looking up what those words mean in the Strong's Hebrew and Greek Interlinears, and by comparing them to 2 or 3 other translations. It's important to gain an understanding of the word from the Hebrew or Greek before going to the other translations due to the fact that not all translations of the Bible in English, have stayed true to the original language's intent, and have consequently offered wording that strays from the original languages. Be careful of translations that try so hard to modernize that the original intent and meaning gets brushed to the wayside.

Your personal study and Scriptural prayer will be further enhanced if you are able to take time to look up each verse and read it in the context of several other verses on either side, disregarding chapter breaks. Understanding the context a verse is taken from will help you in a) understanding the verse, and b) applying it to your own life and prayer time.

Each day's outline will look like the next couple pages.

DAY ONE

You'll find each day's designation in the top left corner.

Matthew 6:10-13

Under the day's number, you'll find the passage's reference. Then we get into our prayer outline for the day:

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Exodus 15:11 Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

Prayer Prompt: Each item in the outline will have a prayer prompt. For this item in our outline, we will focus on who God is and what He's done, by way of discovering His various names and titles in Scripture, and by mentioning various attributes, characteristics, etc. Feel free to pencil in your own entries as well.

Thy kingdom come.

Psalms 2:8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

Prayer Prompt: For this item in our outline, we will focus on various nations and people groups around the world. This might be done by nation name, language family, or people group name. Please remember that just because a given nation, language or people group is not mentioned here, does not in any way intimate that they no longer need the gospel preached to them. Feel free to pencil in your own entries as well. Most nations listed will come from the missional area known as the 10-40 Window.

Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Psalms 21:7 For the king trusteth in the LORD, and through the mercy of the most High he shall not be moved.

Prayer Prompt: For this item in our outline, we will focus on how God asks us to live in the world around us. Many ask, What is God's will for my life? Between the Scriptures shared and the prayer prompts suggested, the reader will gain a feel for how God's will is to be played out in their everyday life. Feel free to pencil in your own entries as well.

Give us this day our daily bread.

Psalms 9:18 For the needy shall not alway be forgotten: the expectation of the poor shall not perish for ever.

Prayer Prompt: For this item in our outline, we will take a more personal tone and offer suggestions related to the various kinds of petitions mentioned in Scripture. Many of these prompts will be related to various Scripture verses shared across the year but will not necessarily occur in the same day's outline. It is at this point in the prayer where you are encouraged to bring your petitions before the Lord. If the needs you are facing are represented by that day's prayer prompt, great. But if not, feel free to pencil in your own entries as well. Remember that many of the prompts are for the needs of others as well. So think over the situations of those you are aware of before overlooking each day's prayer prompt in this section. It may be that someone else needs this particular focus for your petition.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

Psalms 7:8 The LORD shall judge the people: judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness, and according to mine integrity that is in me.

Prayer Prompt: For this item in our outline, we will continue the more personal tone, taking our cues from the daily Scripture verses shared for this point, and considering how God's view of sin should impact why and how we come to Him seeking forgiveness and how and why we should be forgiving others. Keep in mind that that the prayer prompts and their verses may not necessarily occur in the same day's outline. Feel free to pencil in your own entries as they come to you.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:

Psalms 18:3 I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

Prayer Prompt: For this item in our outline, staying with the more personal tone, we will take our prompts from Scripture while sharing both the many ways in which it is okay to call out to God for protection while also showing God's willingness to come to our aid. Other prayer prompts will offer challenges to live uprightly and make wise choices so as not to fall into temptation's trap with no input from the enemy of our souls in the process. As the saying goes, I am my own worst enemy. Feel free to pencil in your own entries as well.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Romans 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Prayer Prompt: Prayer prompts for this last item in the outline will be used to once again thank God for who He is, but also to bow in submission to His authority and awesomeness not only in our lives, but in the world as well. As usual, feel free to pencil in your own entries as well.

You'll see Scripture from both the Old and New Testament, and quite possibly from areas of both Covenants that you either haven't visited before, or forgot were there. Everyone has their favourite verse that they like to go to under various circumstances. It is this author's prayer that as you travel off the beaten path with me, that you'll discover more of God's Word that you'll come to love just as much.

Shall we begin?
