Jenny knocked at Widmark's door, and turned and looked back down the hallway. Absentmindedly, she watched Widmark's receptionist, a small woman in her sixties, answer the phone and consult the doctor's diary. The phone hadn't stopped ringing since she'd come into the building about thirty minutes before, with ladies calling for appointments, and the receptionist struggling to fit them in. The doctor was popular, and fights had been known to break out.

To get on the doctor's list was difficult. Indeed one had to wait to fill a dead woman's shoes. But now Jenny had finally made it. She was, after a two-year wait, knocking at his door.

Her first thought was: how can any man be as beautiful as this? Her second thought was: how can anyone be as beautiful as this? Widmark wore a short white coat, white shirt, red tie, a Patek Phillipe, black trousers, and highly polished black shoes. And, if she had been asked to sum him up in one word, she would have replied: perfection.

She walked in and looked around the room. It was, perhaps, twenty feet long by fifteen wide. There was a desk in one corner, with a chair behind it and another in front of it, a large medical closet with see-though glass doors, through which Jenny glimpsed bottles and jars and medical instruments of various kinds, and, of course, an examination bed and a gynaecological chair, as well as a scales and vertical ruler. On the walls, were several pictures from Widmark's extensive art collection. These included a Braque and a de
