    Author’s note: If this short story seems familiar to some, that’s because it first appeared in Fear Magazine in the early 1990s under the pen name Kylie Bevan (there was a reason for that, not relevant here). I recall being particularly pleased about it, it being the first time my work appeared in print. In fact, I still have the acceptance letter…

    Okay, so why a scoutship?

    I’ve had it with that question. Squadron, DivCom, Starfleet itself—different lips, same stupid question: Frigate, Cruiser, even a goddam Battleship, and you settle for a shit-crate of a three-man scoutship. Why? There’s a reason, a good one, good enough to force me here, in that same shit-crate, in orbit above the Earth, making this recording and wondering if, when copies of it finally reach Starfleet and the media, someone will have brain enough to listen. And with what I’ve witnessed these past few months, someone had better listen. In case it happens again.
