For his inspiration and leadership, I would like to thank Alan Moller, a storm chaser, meteorologist, photographer, teacher and friend. He shared his passion for weather with me and countless others over the years and was one of the pioneers of the storm spotter training method used nationwide by the National Weather Service today. He participated in the first official storm chase program, the 1972 Tornado Intercept Project, and was involved in the development of storm spotter training, forecaster training, and forecasting experiments/training sessions, including a 1985 FSL forecast experiment, a 1986 national microburst symposium, the 1991 Tornado Symposium, and a forecasting stint for the 1995 VORTEX project. Alan’s spirit lives on in this book and through those he has inspired.

For suggestions and contributions to this guide, I would like to thank friends and experts William T. About the Author

Martin Lisius is a veteran storm chaser, producer, director, and cinematographer. He is sometimes called The Storm Whisperer because of his intimate knowledge of severe weather. Lisius has produced several documentaries about storms, including The Chasers of Tornado Alley and Chasing the Wind for public television. He produced StormWatch for the National Weather Service who uses it to train storm spotters nationwide, and founded the Texas Severe Storms Association (TESSA), a non-profit organization dedicated to severe weather education. In 1993, he established StormStock, a collection of premium and rare storm footage and stills, and now one of the oldest stock image brands in the world. You can see storms shot by Lisius on the Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel, and in TV commercials and theatrical features including Son of God, Into the Storm, and Lucy (all 2014 releases). In 2000, he founded Tempest Tours Storm Chasing Expeditions to reveal and teach the wonders of storms to guests from around the world. And, in 2014, Lisius established the SAFE-D Tornado Project to develop a safer way to study tornadoes in the field.

I found out what to do in all types of severe weather when I read this wonderful new book. It gives helpful tips and useful information. I know I will refer to it time and again to make sure I stay safe.

This book is concise, informative, but best of all readable. It is organized, illustrated with incredible pictures and full of sage advice from a seasoned weather expert.

It is rare occurrence to find a book that can give you important information that you need about weather and safety, but not put you to sleep.

A must read for any manager with personnel in the field.
