of British researchers conducted a study in which participants used a computer programme to turn over virtual rocks. Some rocks had snakes lurking underneath, and if you uncovered one, you’d get an electric shock. The results were unexpected. The people who reported the highest levels of stress were those who were told there was a 50 per cent chance of finding a snake.
