    Chapter 1 - The Choice

Chris Jenkins? the tall white stranger asks.

He slides into the booth across from me as if already invited. I stop chewing and think this guy has got some nerve.

Mind if I taste some of those fries? he asks. Before I answer, he reaches over and helps himself.

Excuse me, do I know you? I ask.

He chews for about a minute and then wipes his mouth and smiles.

Look, maybe you’ve got me mixed up with someone else or . . .

No, I think I’ve got the right Chris Jenkins, he says and then reaches into his black suit jacket. He pulls out a small black book, turns several pages, then looks up 99and laughs.

I huff and then shake my head. Look, just . . .

Chris Jenkins, he interrupts. 1257 Cherry Hill Lane. Chicago, Illinois. Social security number three five seven, twenty-two, fifteen seventy-nine. Born March 7, 1975, at 3:57 AM to Mary and Todd Jenkins. Is that correct?

I feel my chest tighten as I stare into his deep-blue eyes.

Who are you? I ask, trying not to appear worried.

    I’m . . .

Would you like to order a drink sir? my server asks.

He looks at her and shakes his head. Can you give us a few minutes Mam? he asks politely.

Sure honey, I’ll be back in five, she says and walks away.

The man reaches over and grabs several more fries.

    Hey, I say.

These taste good. I love the seasoning they use here, he says casually before wiping his hands and tucking the book back in his coat.

Is there something I can help you with? I ask.

Still chewing, he nods and waves his finger.

Strait to the point! he says after swallowing.

    I call for the bill.

The man strokes his short, black hair and looks around the diner before clasping his hands and leaning forward. Chris, I’ve got a deal for you.

A deal, I say after chuckling. I look for the server out of the corner
