Shadow of Utopia (Vol. 2 - The Resistance): Shadow of Utopia, #2
()
About this ebook
Volume 2 of the Shadow of Utopia series!
Once, long ago, the world was a happier place. It was beautiful and rich with life. There was music and laughter, pictures that could move, objects that could sing. When a life was born, people celebrated and hosted parties. When a life was taken, people were overcome with grief. There was light everywhere, and hope could always be found in the darkest of times.
That world was called Earth. Earth is no more.
Now Cora must head off, in search of the lost colonies and a source of hope for her people.
Will she survive the strangers, the creatures, the...unknown that is waiting for her?
Praise for Shadow of Utopia:
"The plot of this story is a very interesting twist on the apocalypse and mutant development."
"This is the story of one of the earth's survivors (Cora). She not only has an interesting background but is also hopeful for the future. Most of the earth's people have lost all hope. The quick-claws and the sharp-tooths are forces to be reckoned with by members of the village."
"The three book set provides an alternative future that is just as current today. Well written and realistic options are provided."

Shadow of Utopia (Vol. 2 - The Resistance) - Luke Shephard
~Volume Two:
The Resistance ~
A dark grey canopy lay overheard, drowning out the sun. Ash was still falling from the bombs that wracked Cora’s village the day before and it gave her an advantage in the light of day. Her eyes were steadily becoming worse, forcing her to rely on her hearing and feet to carry them to safety. Lyle was still injured from the explosion and he limped along beside her, using her for support sometimes.
The way-marker shook in Cora’s hand as she held it out, making sure they were still going in the right direction. The air was bitter cold without the warm rays of the sun, and it felt almost like the cold season. Yet they were still moving west, shuffling along through the ash and rubble of the old world. So far outside the village you could see the collapsed buildings from long ago, drowning in the earth. Glass was everywhere, though it crunched easily under Cora’s feet, and didn’t seem to be salvageable.
When the sun had first rose that day, and both could see far out across the empty expanse, they had begun to lose hope. There was nothing to be seen. No colonies. No survivors. Not even an empty village that once housed mutants. It was as though the stories originated upon nothing. Rumors often spread that way, someone somewhere grasping for hope. For hope was all they had sometimes.
Cora didn’t want hope. She wanted results. She wanted the colonies to be real. She needed them to be real. Already twice during this ridiculous journey she had held back her tears, silently cursing her stupid idea and wishing they had never ran away. They could have foraged what was left of their village, maybe taken down some Raiders in the process, and lived amongst the ruins.
Survivors, they would remember years later. They were survivors.
Now Cora was whisking Lyle off to his death. How stupid could she have been? The existence of the colonies was only a rumor, a warm blanket on a cold night, a juicy piece of meat clenched between your teeth. That was what it was: comfort. It was comfort and hope and nothing more. And Cora was thick enough to believe that it existed.
She shared none of these thoughts with Lyle, whose eyes were the ground, often watery and far away, and seldom looked up to see where they were going. He had probably lost hope in their journey before it even began, grasping onto the one thing that propelled him out of the village: Shyla was alive and at the colonies. Now the thought of her truly being dead swamped his thoughts and Cora could see it. He had accepted their friend was dead and they were lost in the desert, soon to be a sharp-tooth’s meal and just as dead. It was not a pleasant thing to see, though Cora saw it plastered all over his face and wished he would get his mind away from thoughts like those.
‘Let’s take a break,’ she offered.
Lyle simply nodded and collapsed to the ground where he was. He curled up into a ball and laid his head upon his arm. Cora sighed and dropped
