    Dan Reiner was having a long day. When his friend Jill had called in sick, Dan had offered to work her shift at Berger’s department store. He had been behind the cash register for nearly twelve hours and was ready to call it a night.

    Dan glanced down at his watch. It was five minutes until ten o’clock — almost time to cash out and lock up.
