Taking a holiday to Switzerland whisks you into the snowy heart of Europe and the homeland of downhill skiing. In the summer, it is just as easy to go for a mountain walk with a view of the surrounding high Alps. It was here, in the early 20th century, that visitors first skied for fun and where ski lifts first carried them up the slopes.
