Chapter One
Take off the glasses, please.
Archer’s voice was calm, with an underlying layer of steel. I bit back a smile at his quick support. My lover knew me so well. When I seated our prospective client in the delicate-looking Queen Anne settee, it would have been immediately obvious I thought the playing field needed to be leveled. Men who used their size to try to intimidate others in a non-competitive environment didn’t fucking impress me. His little attempt at the knuckle crushing handshake almost earned him a round trip ticket out of our house, but I was curious enough to know what brought the highly sought after running back for the Atlanta Vultures to our door.
Football fan or not, it was hard to live in Atlanta and not recognize our potential client. Tall, dark, and handsome didn’t begin to describe the exotic mixed-race perfection. The first thing most people would notice was the heavy waves of black hair that rioted around his head and down his back. His dark eyes, tilted at the corners, drawing even more attention to the high cheekbones and a straight nose with flared nostrils. I would have to rely on the frequent post-game interviews to recall the bright, wide smile, because it was nowhere in evidence, now.
Take off the glasses? Do you know who I am?
Archer glanced at the business card in his hand, his brows drawn together in a slight frown. According to this, your name is Kebow Trainer and you have a problem. Actually, you have two problems. Because in addition to whatever concern brought you here, unless you manage to remove those glasses and lose the attitude, you’re about to leave without help.
There was a long pause while we sized each other up. I estimated it would take
