About this ebook

With a summer storm threatening to ruin his Friday afternoon, Asa Burton packs his briefcase and bolts for home before the driving gets dangerous. On the interstate, stuck behind an accident, he regrets his decision until he sees Ford Weston standing along the side of the road talking to a police officer.

Ford Weston can't believe his luck, bad and good. First his car gets clipped on the tail end of an accident, and then none other than Asa Burton pulls over and offers him a ride home. Coming face-to-face with the biggest regret of his life leaves Ford off-balance. He screwed up with Asa all those years ago. It was his fault the relationship ended.

Asa can't believe he's found Ford again, so why is he angry with himself? Could it be because Ford walked out on him without a word seventeen years ago and he did nothing to stop him? Asa's sure of only one thing – Fate just handed him the opportunity to win Ford back – and get some answers.

* * *

It felt like he was on hold forever even though it was only a few seconds. Lord, he was going to screw this up somehow. He almost dropped his phone when Asa answered.

"Hello, Ford."

"Asa. I, um, hope you don't mind me calling." Boy, that was slick.

"No, no. Not at all. What can I do for you?"

Ford took a breath in the hope of steadying himself. He hated to sound stupid and he was certain he did.

"Would you have time to see me today? You know, as a lawyer."

There was a slight pause before Asa replied. "May I ask what this is about?"

Crap. Did that mean Asa would only see him for business? It was time he admitted to himself he wanted a lot more than that.

"I landed a big job today. Actually, it's the most important job I've ever gotten. I need a good lawyer to look over the contract. I thought – I hoped you'd agree to look it over."

"Is that all you want, Ford?"

Was that a note of hope in Asa's quiet voice or did he want to believe it so badly he imagined it?

Ford closed his eyes and saw a younger Asa.

Asa had trusted him and for at least that one night, he hadn't let Asa down.

"No, Asa. I need to see you."

KC Kendricks

KC Kendricks calls herself an accidental writer. After completing her first novel writing as Rayne Forrest, she was urged to submit it to a publisher, and everything snowballed from there. Today, the author has had over seventy books published. In July of 2021, she tried to retire but her employer offered her a deal to work at home. She accepted. Now she balances work, writing, and hearth and home in a controlled chaos. A native of scenic western Maryland, the author enjoys most activities that don’t include snow. In warm weather she might be found walking the dog, biking on the C&O Canal towpath, planting delicacies in her garden for the deer to munch on at night, playing in the creek, or lazing on the patio with her Kindle reader or laptop. She recently began to research her family history and can't drive past a cemetery without stopping to search for family sites. Her mission is to photograph old tombstones before the elements erode the stones and the names are lost to time. Undeniable - KC Kendricks

    From Undeniable...

...It felt like he was on hold forever, even though it was only a few seconds. Lord, he was going to screw this up somehow. He almost dropped his phone when Asa answered.

    Hello, Ford.

Asa. I, um, hope you don’t mind me calling. Boy, that was slick.

No, no. Not at all. What can I do for you?

Ford took a breath in the hope of steadying himself. He hated to sound stupid...and he was certain he did.

Would you have time to see me today? You know, as a lawyer.

There was a slight pause before Asa replied. May I ask what this is about?

Crap. Did that mean Asa would only see him for business? It was time he admitted to himself he wanted a lot more than that.

I landed a big job today. Actually, it’s the most important job I’ve ever gotten. I need a good lawyer to look over the contract. I thought...I hoped you’d agree to look it over.

    Is that all you want?

Was that a note of hope in Asa’s quiet voice or did Ford want to believe it so badly he imagined it?

Ford closed his eyes and saw a younger Asa sprawled naked on his bed, the golden candlelight flickering across the white globes of his virgin buttocks. Asa had trusted him, and for at least that one night, he hadn’t let Asa down.

No, Asa. I need to see you...

    CHAPTER 1

If he had to turn forty, which was decidedly better than the alternative of not reaching the big Four-O, Asa Burton wanted a party. And he didn’t want just any party. Asa wanted a big, motherfucking, call-the-cops bash. And if he happened to get a blowjob in some dark corner, he wouldn’t have a problem with it.

As it was, his fortieth birthday slid past with barely a ripple on the waters of his life, and he was annoyed. His friends, perhaps sensing his imminent self-destructive fall into debauchery, didn’t throw one for him. The best they’d managed to provide was a single card signed by all. Asa was peeved for two weeks before deciding his buddies had probably saved him from himself.

He tried to practice a prevailing truism that stated if you take care of the big things in life first, the little things fall into place around them. The birthday bash had been a big thing in his life. Seventeen years ago, he’d met the love of his life at a birthday party, and he’d been praying for lightning to strike twice. That hadn’t happened, so having missed getting a big thing in his life jar taken care of, he was unclear what smaller stuff he needed.

Even when proverbial wisdom was true, it was not instructional on what to do when a big thing bombed out. It took trial and error for a man to figure out the next step if he could and not lose patience while doing it. Asa wasn’t sure he had the wherewithal to accomplish it.

One thing he knew for sure was he wouldn’t accomplish anything else today. It was Friday afternoon, and with thunderstorms bearing down on the city, everyone in the law firm of Byers, Albright & Miller, including the partners, were stuffing folders in their briefcases so they could bolt for home before the rain started.

Asa leaned on the doorframe of Bob Miller’s office.

    Ready to go, boss?

I’ve been waiting for you. Bob got to his feet and grabbed his satchel. Thanks for the lift home. I know it takes you out of your way.

And it put him onto Interstate 81. Not Asa’s favorite road, even on a sunny day. It was a main north-south highway, and the big-rig truckers owned it.

Not a problem, Bob. There’s no point in your wife driving out in a storm to come get you.

Bob clapped him on the shoulder. And they say a good lawyer doesn’t have a heart.

Asa snorted. Maybe I’m not a good lawyer.

His boss stopped in his tracks. Hey, you’re a great one, Asa. I didn’t mean to imply otherwise. Is this about turning forty?

Today everything was, but Asa wasn’t about to cop to it.

    Nope.

Bob made a rude sound. You don’t fool me, Asa.

Asa grinned, even though he didn’t want to. He motioned at the door to the parking garage. C’mon. We need to get on the road.

Once in the car, Asa regretted his decision even more, which raised his level of internal annoyance. What was wrong with him that doing a kind thing made
