Hell and High Water: Coastal College Players, #2

About this ebook
When opposites attract, unlikely friends become even more unlikely lovers.
This straight to bi, friends to lovers romance novella has an HEA and no cliffhanger.
He’s smitten…
Danny Perez can’t keep his eyes off Kade Gorecki. With his long, lean, muscular build, stunning green eyes, and all-American smile, the star basketball player is simply gorgeous.
Unfortunately, Kade's also straight, and his politically incorrect humor makes Danny wince one too many times. He offers to help Kade out in the manners department—and the fact that it lets them spend more time together is a bonus.
He’s confused…
Kade doesn’t mean to offend. He tries to say the right thing, but it comes out wrong—as though he’s caught in a game where no one will tell him the rules. He’s thrilled when Danny offers to mentor him.
But he can’t help noticing the beauty in Danny’s high cheekbones and deep-set dark eyes. If Kade is straight, then why does Danny tie his stomach in knots like a pretty girl does?
In the eye of the storm...
As their friendship becomes something more, Danny wonders if his heart is safe. Kade’s conservative Southern background doesn’t make it easy for him to embrace a more fluid sense of his own sexuality.
While they're hunkered down together during a hurricane, a misunderstanding blows up into something much more serious. Now Kade’s missing, and Danny’s frantic. Will they—and their relationship—survive in one piece?

Chapter 1
THE SCENT OF CHOCOLATE filled the airy kitchen. Bright sunlight streamed through the windows and reflected off the stainless steel appliances. Danny Perez breathed in, savoring the sweet aroma of the sheet cake. It sat on the granite-topped island in the house that his friends Nick and Julian were renting. Well, technically, Nick's rich daddy was renting it, while Nick finished up his last two years at North Carolina Coastal College.
Julian was Nick's boyfriend and officially Danny's roommate as far as the college was concerned. His mama was religious and wouldn't approve of Julian moving in with his boyfriend before marriage. So they were keeping up a charade for when his parents came to visit.
Not that Danny ought to mind. Sophomores weren't allowed to have single rooms, so he was in an enviable position, having the place to himself. Two closets to hold his extensive wardrobe. Privacy if he had a gentleman caller.
He eyed the cake, the chocolate frosting decorated with Happy Housewarming
in blue and yellow script. Danny wasn't ashamed to admit to himself that he missed Julian. The quiet room made him restless and bored. And he couldn't help being jealous of how stupidly in love Nick and Julian were. Danny had never experienced anything like that, and the absence smoldered like a slow burn in his chest.
He picked up the shiny cake knife and counted how many slices he would need for the group gathered outside on the deck. Eight should do it. He slid the knife into the soft confection and cut eight perfectly uniform pieces.
The latch rattled on the French doors in the great room adjacent to the open kitchen. Danny looked up as Kade Goreki stepped inside. A wave of heat swept over Danny, a soft stirring in his cock that he instantly willed down.
Kade was tall and lean and tanned, and his white polo shirt showed off his contoured biceps. The basketball team's gorgeous star center had golden-brown hair and green eyes. His cheekbones and chiseled chin would make a movie star weep with envy.
But Kade was as straight as the stick up his ass.
Beau said I should come help you.
Danny raised his brows at that. Beau, Kade's roommate, had been cranky all afternoon, and had probably sent Kade inside to keep from killing him. Beau was dating Danny's sister Alisse, and was as easygoing as they came—but Kade had a way of getting on everyone's last nerve.
Give me a minute,
Danny said. I'll plate these slices, and you can help me carry them outside.
Danny topped a blue dessert-sized paper plate with a white pastry doily. Kade scowled at him. Why are you putting the cake on paper like that? It isn't sanitary.
Of course it is. This is what they're designed for.
It's a waste.
Beauty is never a waste.
Kade went silent as Danny continued his task. Until he said, Why are you wearing lipstick?
Danny took a calming breath. It's lip gloss, and I wear it because I enjoy it.
Kade shot him an uncomprehending glance. Makeup is for girls.
Danny forced his attention onto the slice of cake he was transferring to a plate. Not in the house where I grew up. One of my fathers is a drag queen.
Kade's eyes went wide. No way!
Yes, way.
Danny kept his tone even, wondering where the fuck this conversation was headed.
Alisse had told him that Kade was like Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory, and had no idea how offensive he was. A computer science major, when he wasn't on the basketball court, he was working on his computer. He was apparently some kind of programming genius, but had no social skills to speak of. Danny could attest to that last part.
That must have been weird, growing up in a family like that.
I couldn't say.
An acerbic edge crept into Danny's voice. A family like that is my normal.
Kade grew more animated. Alisse said you had gay dads, but she didn't mention one was a drag queen. So, does he dress like a woman all the time?
No, only when he's performing.
Kade knitted his brow. What do you mean, performing?
He's an entertainer. Cabaret shows.
A perplexed look crossed Kade's features. You mean, like, a stripper?
No, nothing like that. He sings and dances.
Oh, okay, that makes more sense.
Kade nodded thoughtfully. So...are you a performer?
The boy's mind certainly did make some odd leaps. I do some acting in the school Shakespeare troupe.
But you wear makeup even when you're not acting.
Danny sighed and set down the cake server. Yes.
So you just like dressing like a girl?
I don't dress like a girl, Kade. I don't ascribe gender to clothing the way most people do.
Then you're, like, genderfluid?
Danny's lips parted. He was shocked Kade knew that word. No, darlin', I identify as male. My definition of masculinity isn't as limited as yours.
Kade's shoulders slumped. You don't make any sense.
Danny fought off a laugh at that. Kade was talking like an idiot savant, yet Danny was the one who didn't make sense.
What's confusing you, darlin'?
You're wearing makeup and nail polish and a pink tank top. Yet you say that you don't dress like a girl and you're not genderfluid. So what are you?
Comfortable in my own skin.
Kade rolled his eyes. "But you've got to be something."
I don't feel comfortable with labels.
Then how is anyone supposed to know what you are?
I'm a sophomore studying pharmaceutical sciences.
You know what I mean.
Not really. Why is this so important to you?
I don't know what to make of you.
Then don't make anything of me. Accept me for who I am.
Kade pursed his lips assessingly, then nodded. I guess I can try that.
His voice dropped to a murmur. You're not offended, are you? It seems like I'm always offending people, but I don't know it. Alisse is trying to help me. Your sister's nice.
Danny's lips curved into a smile. Do you have a little crush on her?
Kade stared. What? No! I would never think about Beau's girlfriend that way. He's been good to me. He puts up with me when no one else would.
Kade sank inside himself, turning silent. A stoic expression crossed his face.
Danny could feel the dismay radiating off of him. He walked around to the other side of the island and clapped Kade on the back. Now don't go and upset yourself. I was only teasing. Alisse may be my sister, and I may be gay, but I can see that she's pretty.
"Oh, yeah, she's beautiful, but she's
