    Chapter 1

Richard watched his destined mate, Camilla, from a nearby tree. He could smell her intoxicating scent, carried by the midday breeze. He inhaled deeply, letting her scent surround him. He still remembered that one moment where she kissed him while she was still pregnant. He wanted to take her right then and there but Cam pulled away, got very angry, and threw him out of the room. Ever since that day he wanted to tell her his feeling, but his sister, Gretchen, had been an obstacle. Gretchen warned him off, but it’s been months so maybe she wouldn’t be so against the idea now.

Richard was very aware how dangerous being this close to his sister and her mate. They were enforcers, after all, but he needed to check on Cam to see her. He sometimes wondered if seeing her only from a distance was worse than not seeing her at all.

Gretchen took a big chance by tipping him off. If anyone found out she could be imprisoned right next to him. Richard still didn’t know why a warrant was issued. He’d never even been to the other realm so it was a mystery what law of theirs he could have broken. Since he went into hiding, he had spent a lot of time as a cat but he couldn’t leave Cam so he stayed in the area. He was big in his cat form with big yellow eyes and grey and black fur. He stretched in the tree then scratched the tree limbs with his claws.

Oh yeah, nothing like getting my claws out.

Each time he visited Cam he noticed he stayed longer and longer, getting increasingly more reluctant to leave. He finally forced himself to go back. He ran through the woods. He ran as fast as his feline legs would carry him. The sights and sounds of the forest made him feel alive and primal. He reached his destination—an old abandoned boathouse. It sat on the edge of an expanded area of swamp and was his new home. He found it by accident one day while exploring further than he had ever gone before.

The hideout wasn’t much more than a shack, with the wood rotting in spots and falling apart. He only had a few meager possessions: a cot to sleep on, a few books to read, and a small battery operated camping light. He kept a disposable cell phone but only turned it on when he used it for fear that he would be tracked somehow. He had been hiding for six months already and didn’t know what else to do. He didn’t even know what the warrant accused him of. The sun came down and the nocturnal creatures of the swamp came out. At first, it freaked him out to hear all the strange noises, but now it was comforting; a lullaby to sooth him to sleep.

Richard turned on his phone and decided it was time to call Gretchen. After seeing Cam this last time, he knew he couldn’t hide forever. He decided it would be better to fight and go to prison than to hide and be separated from Cam.

    Gretchen.

Richard, is that you? I’ve been worried sick and Adrian has been searching all over the city for you.

I’m sure he has. I’m sure he would love to cash in the bounty on my head.

Richard, it’s not like that. I should have never told you. If you turn yourself in, we can help you. Hiding just makes you look guilty.

Gretch, I don’t want a lecture. Please just tell me, what are the charges? Richard pleaded.

The warrant is for rape and heresy against the bloodline.

First of all, I don’t rape. The women come to my bed willingly and I don’t know what the second part means.

While Adrian has been trying to locate you, I’ve been speaking with every Fae that will speak with me on your behalf trying to get some clarification. It’s a political nightmare. As far as I can tell, it means you did something to tarnish the bloodline of the woman in question.

I’m still not sure what that means.

I don’t either, but I think I met someone today who may be able to help.

Who? Tell me and I will go and beg for help if I need to.

    Our grandfather; our Fae Grandfather.

    What are you talking about?

Grandma married a Fae, our Grandfather, and then she had our mother and that’s why we have these weird Fae traits. His name is Lachlan and he’s a powerful Fae from my understanding. He works for the royal family handing out punishments. Cam is scared shitless of him and he wants to be a part of my life. I can talk to him for you.

Gretchen, I need time to process all of this. I’ll be in contact.

Richard hung up the phone. He immediately turned it off and sat back onto his cot. He was frustrated as it seemed like everything was falling apart. He hated knowing his sister was mixed up in this mess.

    Chapter 2

Camilla sat on the porch swing, rocking her baby girl, Zoe. She could sense her visitor again. It didn’t frighten her, but she wondered why, whoever it was, hid. She would welcome a new friend if only whoever it was would show themselves. The strange thing was the mysterious presence had a familiar feel, which couldn’t be.

Zoe smiled and put up her chubby fingers and suddenly a small brown baby bunny started floating toward them.

Zoe, put that bunny back right now. Zoe giggled before the bunny slowly floated back away. Cam knew Fae children could be challenging, but trying to appear human with Zoe’s antics would become more and more difficult.

Zoe, I don’t know if you understand me, but you can’t just use your gift whenever you want. Human aren’t comfortable with anyone different. Cam hugged her daughter. She worried what life would be like for a Fae child growing up in the human world. She heard the door open and saw Gretchen appear in the doorway. Gretchen was a Werecat and Fae hybrid. She took on mostly Werecat traits with multicolor hair and her mother and grandfather’s violet eyes. Cam thought Gretchen was stunning with her unique exotic look and curvy body.

Cam was short with bright red, curly hair and now that she had a baby she was rather pudgy in her own opinion.

It’s the portal; you have a call. Cam handed Zoe to Gretchen and went inside the house. She walked in front of the portal. The portal was a way for the Fae to communicate. To anyone other than a Fae it looked like a wall decoration, but when activated it was a way for the Fae to communicate between worlds. She found Lachlan-the punisher waiting for her. He was a handsome Fae with blond hair and violet eyes. Cam had only seen him from a distance before, and he didn’t look nearly as deadly up close. He smiled at Cam, but that was anything but comforting.

Don’t be frightened. I am Lachlan and I have called upon you to discuss your banishment.

Cam put her head down with shame, even though she was no longer in danger of going to prison. Being banished for sleeping with the king wasn’t something she was proud of. I understand, Lachlan-the punisher.

Please just call me Lachlan. I will be in charge of keeping tabs on you. I will be contacting you periodically—think of it as parole. At least until the Queen has her first child; then perhaps she will lose interest.

Cam thought she was free of the Seelie royal family once and for all, but it looks like it was just the beginning. It seems like once you sleep with the Queen’s husband, you’re on the radar for good. She sometimes wished she could go back and make better choices, stay away from the king entirely, but one look at her daughter and she realized things happened for a reason and she was happy now and didn’t want to change a thing.

I understand. I will do whatever you ask of me. I have no interest in returning to the other realm. I want to live a quite life here with the humans.

Lachlan gave her a small smile. Good girl. That’s all I need from you for now. Could you get Gretchen? I need to speak with her.

Cam turned around to see Gretchen standing there with baby Zoe pulling at her hair.

    ***

I’m here, Gretchen exclaimed as she stared at her grandfather in the glass.

Wonderful. I’m not sure if you have been informed or not, but I am your grandfather.

Someone mentioned a resemblance, Gretchen replied coldly.

I’m sorry I couldn’t be there for you or your mother. It was too dangerous. The good news is now I have eliminated my enemies and now I want to claim you as mine and help you to learn about your Fae heritage.

    I appreciate the interest, Lachlan.

    Please call me Grandfather.

Grandfather, I think I have all the help I need. Adrian is a great teacher.

I’ll let you think about it. I will be in contact. Good day, ladies.

The Fae glass went clear and they both stood there, uncertain what to say.

Cam put her arms around Gretchen and hugged her. I’m here for you. They both looked toward the living room where the magazines were circling the room.

Zoe, stop, Cam yelled and all the magazines fell to the ground.

Gretchen couldn’t help but laugh. She loved Cam and Zoe and couldn’t imagine life without them. They felt like family.

I don’t know about you, but I need ice cream, Cam declared.

Gretchen grabbed her keys. Let’s go.

Cam and Zoe shared a banana split at The Creole Creamery, Gretchen sipping on her chocolate shake. Gretchen loved this place. She had been coming here since she was
