    Return of the Anasazi

    PROLOGUE

The sun circled his tiny planet four times. Owl Man waited for a vision, a voice to tell him what to do.

He had been sitting on High Plateau wearing a loincloth and a turquoise squash blossom necklace, which identified him as a leader. He had eaten only dry meat and had taken sips of spring water.

Temporary planets such as the one he and his people lived on usually disappeared every thousand years. Planet Anasazi was more than nine hundred years old, and he reasoned it must be time to return to Mother Earth. The promised Ultimate Leader would come. He would be called Eagle Leader, and he would lead them home.

Owl Man called upon the Great Spirit to enlighten him. He sensed time was running out for his people and their planet. He smelled piñon pine and sage as a

gentle breeze blew across High Plateau. Closing his eyes, he felt the hot desert sun. An owl made hooting sounds, encouraging the man to continue his meditation.

Suddenly Owl Man could see and hear a gigantic wave, building itself as it reared up from the ocean floor. With no warning, it roared and rolled toward land, climbing higher and higher. The white, sandy beach was crowded with people lying in the sun on colorful blankets, playing with all sorts of toys, and infants squealing and running in the frothy water close to shore. In the water, men bobbed about on boards.

They didn’t see the tsunami coming until it was already upon them. It hurled them at the land.

Run! Owl Man cried out, even though the people couldn’t hear him. He was horrified by the absolute power of the wave as it carried destruction and death

ashore. The wave reached skyward, towering higher than the people had ever seen. It crested, crashing on the beach, killing people and leveling their structures.

Shaken by the sight of a killer wave, Owl Man’s vision continued. Next he saw a beautiful mountain island surrounded by blue waters. As he watched, smoke came from the mountaintop. The smoke grew in mass, and its color changed from black to orange to a fiery red. Then came a powerful roar as the mountain exploded. From its bowels flowed red-hot Return of the Anasazi molten lava. Ash and destruction spewed into the sky, swept by ferocious winds. He could smell the sulfur, and it made his eyes water.

Owl Man felt the ground beneath him shake. He wasn’t sure which was shaking — the Earth of his vision, or the Earth of his planet. He knew that both planets were in trouble. He wanted the prophecy to end. He wanted to go to his wife, Little Deer. He wanted to share all he was seeing.

He could end it by opening his eyes...yet he felt compelled to finish the images. A deep cry escaped his throat: No more, please!

Destructive winds blew across the land, ripping trees up by their roots and tearing roofs from buildings. Torrential rains came, and rivers swelled to overflowing, pushing houses, people, and animals into the murderous waters. He heard their screaming as the muddy waters rolled over their homes. The water’s momentum made the river unstoppable.

The Earth shook again. He was pulled into the images, and now he could hear the sounds of nature’s rage and smell the smells of an environment gone wild. Great Spirit, make it stop! he cried aloud.

Owl Man did not want to see any more, yet he stayed with the vision.

Abruptly, he was pulled away from the catastrophe and was thrown into deep space. The Earth became a small blue ball spewing smoke and red flames; it

seemed to tilt at an awkward angle.

As his view of space expanded, he could see a blazing red mass with a long, white vapor cloud trailing behind. The fiery red ball, he realized, was an

    enormous asteroid racing toward Earth.

Great Spirit, you show me Mother Earth being destroyed. How are we to return? What do you want me to do?

He could look no more. He opened his eyes, shaking as he fell forward to his knees, then raised his face toward the sky. His palms turned upward to receive, and he cried out, Great Spirit, what can I do? Please help me.

A calm, resonant voice replied, "Remove Earth men and their structures from Mother Earth. Release rivers from their dams. Remove the concrete that man

has poured on her surface, for she cannot breathe. She was created to breathe. Earth is a living entity.

Because ores and gases have been pulled from her center and because of overbuilding, her weight has been displaced. This will cause her to tilt into a

    collision course with an asteroid.

Owl Man, you have thirty suns to move them and their edifices to a new planet called Earthalike. Leave native tribes on Mother Earth. Everyone and everything else must go. Thirty days, Owl Man.

Wait! Owl Man called desperately. "I don’t know how to do that. How can I do what you ask?

Great Spirit, don’t go. Tell me how to do what you ask."

In answer, Owl Man heard only gentle breezes and hooting from his owl companion.

Overwhelmed, Owl Man shook his head as if to clear his thinking. He did not know what he could do.

If he could accomplish the mission, he would surely achieve his dream of becoming an exalted leader, and he would get to spend eternity with the Great Spirit.

He would lead the Anasazi home.

If he failed, Earth would be destroyed.

His stomach growled, and he felt weak. I must return to the village to talk with Little Deer. She can help me.

Owl Man stood up, stretching his long body.

"Goodbye, my owl friend. I must go back to the village. Somehow I must learn how to complete this assignment. If I fail, I will never gain eternal life with

the Great Spirit, and my people will die."

    Chapter One

Taking long strides, Owl Man walked faster and faster. The more he pondered, the faster he walked toward his village. He was troubled because he had no idea how to do what the vision asked him to do.

There was no doubt that he had to try. A great bald eagle had flown over as he had sat meditating, signifying that he had correctly received his vision.

As he approached his home, black and brown village dogs came running to greet him. They circled him, yapping and bringing him sticks for throwing.

Absent-mindlessly, he patted them, bending once in a while to throw a stick.

He glanced toward his dwelling and saw his beloved Little Deer standing at the opening, waving to him. His heart thumped against his chest. After all these years, the sight of her still stirred him. Little Deer wore her jet-black hair in braids intertwined with turquoise beads. Her face revealed a few wrinkles which followed the path of many smiles. She wore a leader’s turquoise squash blossom necklace. When she was not talking to someone, she could be heard humming a pleasing tune as she walked through the village. The villagers loved her.

He waved back, anxious to be with her. He wanted to feel her arms around him when he told her of his revelation. He quickened his pace.

He would have to convince leaders of the Incas, Mayans, Aztecs, and the leader of Atlantis — in fact, all the old civilization leaders — to believe in his vision. He would ask them to disrupt the lives they had led for nine hundred years. He would ask them to believe and follow him.

He felt his stomach knot as he thought of confronting his old enemy Quezalt, leader of the

Aztecs. He would be joined by Tenoch, leader of the Toltecs, and probably Takal, leader of the Mayans. He also dreaded facing the Olmecs. He had not encountered any of them since their days on Earth.

Fierce and overbearing was how he remembered them. The meeting would not be pleasant.

Village children ran forward to meet him.

Owl Man, can you take us hunting?

Owl Man, can you help us with the pottery?

Owl Man, can you show us how to sharpen the obsidian?

He smiled as his thoughts returned to his real world. He loved the children, and he often taught them the ancient skills of his people; however, today he had much larger things on his mind.

Squatting down to their level, he spoke gently. "We will do lessons soon. Right now I have to talk with Little Deer about a vision sent to me by the Great

Spirit. Go and practice the things you know, and soon I will come to teach you more things."

He saw the look of disappointment, but they scurried off. He resumed walking swiftly toward his dwelling.

He thought of the old civilizations living on their own small planets, waiting to be called upon to return to Earth. It would be hard to convince them that the time had come. Many no longer believed in a return; the promise had become a myth.

Once more, he shook his head to clear his thoughts.

Pressure was building in his mind — not about what he had to do, but how to do it. He would call a meeting of the old civilization leaders. They would assemble on the new planet, Earthalike, where he had to convince them his revelation was true. He would ask their help in deciding how to move the Earth people. It was a formidable task.

Smelling fry bread now, he ran the few remaining steps to their home. He hugged Little Deer and began talking rapidly.

Mother Earth’s delicate balance is disrupted, causing Earth to tilt into the path of an asteroid. If the weight can be redistributed, she can right herself and the asteroid will go by without destroying all life, and Earth will be saved. He paused for a breath, then continued. The Great Spirit spoke of disastrous events. He showed me volcanic eruptions, tsunami waves, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and fire. He was talking fast, blurting everything out so

    he wouldn’t forget.

Drawing in a deep breath and exhaling, he had an idea. He would send a telepathic message to his brother, Grey Eagle. He would ask him to help.

Together they might convince the old civilization leaders to act, and maybe they would have an idea of how to move the Earth people.

    Chapter Two

Little Deer watched her beloved husband returning from his meditation. She waved to him, and finally he looked up and returned her greeting.

Her body reacted with an intimate tingle. My husband is still a handsome man with his sharply angled features and eyes that reflect his every mood. She

noted that his black hair was tied back with a buckskin band she had made for him.

She watched as he squatted to talk to the children.

He had remained the same for many centuries. People aged differently on every planet. She knew aging had to do with fulfilling your life purpose rather than

    wearing out a physical body.

She turned to tend their fry bread; pleasant smells filled the dwelling. He would be hungry after his fasting.

Their red stone dwellings were constructed in exact replicas of their home in Chaco Canyon. It was here that Owl Man had grown to manhood. She watched

him as he taught each new generation how to build their homes as he had been taught by leaders of Deep Space. He had improved on the building and on the

irrigation systems. She was proud of all he had accomplished. He was loved by all the people. She knew his vision would change everything.

There were other areas on their planet, and they paralleled Mesa Verde, Pueblo Bonito, and Moqui canyons. Rivers and streams flowed through the valley floor, as had the San Juan River and lesser streams on Earth. They had plenty of water, and they lived comfortably on this planet. Soon their lives would be disturbed.

Little Deer heard rustling in the back of her dwelling, and it was a familiar sound of someone arriving via spirit travel. Owl Empress materialized.

Little Deer welcomed her with an exuberant hug.

My friend, it is good to see you. Owl Man is just returning from a trip to High Plateau. He has been given a vision.

I know. That is why I have come. I have seen the events of your future. You will need to stay very strong. Owl Man faces extreme opposition from Quezalt and the other leaders. He will be tested to the Return of the Anasazi edge of breaking. Gently taking Little Deer’s hand, Owl Empress continued. "You have been good to my son. You love him in spite of his fears and weaknesses. He has become a mighty leader because of your support. Your strength will be tested by the

    events yet to come."

For many years, Owl Empress had been the spiritual leader for the Anasazi. Her gently wrinkled face spoke of years of laughter, joy, and love for her people. Little Deer looked at her with admiration. Her jet-black hair, now streaked with silver, was worn in braids interwoven with conch shells and turquoise.

She wore a light buckskin skirt and white cotton top decorated with brightly colored woven patterns. She wore a large leader’s turquoise squash blossom

necklace. Her wrist and fingers were adorned with obsidian, jade, and turquoise jewelry. She was a beautiful woman, with tawny skin and sparkling, dark brown eyes. Her bearing spoke of wisdom and knowing.

The two spiritual leaders walked together to the entrance of the dwelling, looking out at the expansive desert below. Little Deer was frightened, for she had never heard such ominous predictions from Owl Empress. She breathed in the dry desert air.

Little Deer squeezed the hand she held. "Thank you. I love him, and I know his vision will force him to go places he has never been and to learn things he

does not know. I know he will be frightened. I will be with him always. I’m glad I can talk to you about his fears. No one else would dare speak to me of such

weakness. If they did, I would get angry and defend him."

I know. Owl Empress smiled. I must go. I am needed in Hollow Earth. She dissipated.

Little Deer’s mind went back to a time, approximately 1100 A.D., when they had lived on Earth.

    Chapter Three

Little Deer quietly pushed aside the branches of the willows to better view the river. Meadow Flower giggled behind her. Little Deer turned to her, placing a finger to her lips.

Shss, she whispered, with a cautioning look, but they both broke out in giggles again. Little Deer looked at her friend and was moved by how much they looked alike. They could be sisters, with jet-black hair, brown eyes, and smooth, tawny skin. Little Deer was two years older, and they were not related; but she had taken Meadow Flower as her sister many years before, when her blood sister died of pneumonia.

Little Deer transferred all her love to her friend. Little Deer cherished Meadow Flower’s friendship.

From the time they were very small, growing up in the dwellings of Chaco Canyon, they had been inseparable. Their apartments abutted each other, so

many nights when they were supposed to be sleeping, they would slip out into a moonlit kiva where they talked of two special young men and giggled. They

never ran out of adventures and stories with which to entertain themselves. And now, watching the two men in the river, they would have more to talk about.

Little Deer looked at Owl Man. His most commanding features were his eyes. They seemed to see into your soul. She got all soft whenever he looked into her eyes. He would assume leadership when his father crossed the river. He was born into leadership; that was what his family did in the Anasazi culture.

Still hidden in the cottonwoods and willows that grew along the water’s edge, Little Deer and Meadow Flower continued to watch the young men, and they

continued to giggle. They were enjoying forbidden looks at the handsome male bodies.

Little Deer turned to Meadow Flower. Someday I will marry Owl Man. I will help him when it comes his day to lead. He will be my husband for all eternity.

Then I will marry Grey Eagle so we can always be friends and never be separated.

Meadow Flower tittered as they watched their future husbands. Her brown eyes always danced with mischief. Young men looked upon her with more than

passing interest; yet none would cross the line because they knew she would one day belong to Grey Eagle. You’ll have to tame him first. Little Deer laughed as she squeezed her friend’s hand.

Oh look, how handsome they are! Meadow Flower shrieked with joy. He is mine already. He told me that when he gets old, he wants to be with me.

    Will you wait for him?

Of course. I can tame him. I lived through the black disease because I am to be his. Meadow Flower had asthma, and she had recovered from pneumonia. Her respiratory system was weak and would cause her a short life.

Owl Man and Grey Eagle swam lazily in the river.

It was spring in Anasazi land. Cumulus clouds floated across the blue desert skies. The air was warm, alive with the sounds of working bees, the cries of canyon wrens, and the sweet scent of new flowers blossoming.

Grey Eagle was easily recognizable as Owl Man’s brother, except he had a small scar running down his cheek to his upper lip. When he smiled, the scar gave

him a lopsided grin. He had laughing eyes set deep above his angular cheekbones. He was quick to laugh, and he loved to tease. He had an eye for village girls, and they for him. One girl captured his eye more than

any other. Owl Man sometimes envied his brother’s ease with people.

I am troubled, brother, Owl Man said as he swam beside Grey Eagle. Our father spoke to me, saying that the Anasazi will disappear from Earth and live for many centuries in a distant land. He said there will be a division of the people, half of us taking one path and half taking a different way.

Grey Eagle looked steadily at his older brother. "I think you heard him wrong. The Anasazi are the keepers of Mother Earth. He was talking of a time long ago when the Anasazi were removed from Earth.

You will be our next leader. We will stay here to take care of Mother Earth. I will walk with you, and the people will follow you, Owl Man."

    Owl Man started to interrupt.

No, let me finish. There will be no splitting of our paths. I know it. This time you heard wrong. Grey Eagle swam to a nearby rock and sat with his feet

dangling in the river. He kicked the water as he watched Owl Man swim over to sit beside him on the rock.

Owl Man shook his hair, tossing his head back to clear his face. "Listen to me. Our father spoke to me.

He said he must cross the river. Time is running short, and the role of leader has to pass before he can cross.

He said both of us will soon be sent to Deep Space for marriage and leadership training."

Grey Eagle threw pebbles at the river, watching the rings spread and grow in its gentle current. "I don’t believe it. I cannot bear to think of being separated

from you, and our father is thought by some to be the Ultimate Leader. That is why they named him Near Eagle — because he was so powerful. How can such a

powerful leader be taken from us?" His tears bubbled up to his eyes, and he brushed them away.

It is not our job to question the Great Spirit, Owl Man said firmly. "It is our job to lead when our time comes. He told me that we live in the second time of the Anasazi on Earth. Many centuries ago, our ancestors inhabited the Four Corners. They lived peacefully until the Toltecs and the Olmecs came.

Then there was warring, killing, and all sorts of trouble."

"Yes, I know the story. Cannibalism was introduced to some of the young, rebellious Anasazi men, and it became fashionable to practice this hideous

act. Many of the young men began to be puffed up with self. They began to disparage the old ways. They exploited their gifts of astro-travel, walk-throughs, and mental telepathy. They acquired the traits of greed and self-centeredness. The chosen Anasazi were on a course of self-destruction. So what?"

"Grey Eagle, our people could not survive without our spiritual nature. We have always been connected to the spiritual life. As the outsiders encroached, the

people began to place too much emphasis on the physical world. Since the Anasazi are chosen by the Great Spirit to protect Mother Earth, they were taken

to Deep Space where once again they were taught the values of chosen people. They did not return to Earth for several centuries. The Great Spirit transported

them into space so their purity could be salvaged."

I have heard the story, Grey Eagle interrupted.

"Sometimes you make me mad with your know-it-all attitude. When we were returned to Mother Earth some centuries later, we came with renewed spiritual

values. Our people filled the land of the Four Corners and all of the Southwest, and now our villages are many. We
