Xerxes gave Laleh one last kiss, holding it until her lungs ached as nearly as much as her heart. He tasted of olives and honeydew, and Laleh didn’t want break away. Eventually, Xerxes did, and spoke, "You should go, gulbadan; the generals will be here soon."

I’m staying, my prince. Nasrin is waiting on the empress and I’m to serve the generals food and drink. She gestured toward the table with fruit and wine that sat at the rear of the tent.

And advice, too, if I don’t miss my guess. He laughed a little as he spoke, and he hadn’t yet let go of her hands.

Only if I’m asked. My suggestion worked out well for us at Lade, no?

True. And it had. Suggesting that they allow some of the captured Greek nobility to persuade their fellows to defect from the Milesian’s fleet had saved hundreds, maybe thousands, of lives.

Laleh pecked him on the lips. I live to serve you and the empire both, Xerxes. And I will be quiet as a kitten unless you or Datis call upon me.

Artabanus in his saffron vest entered first. The muffled clanging and yellow of the camp pitched up with the tent flap. Datis followed, then two more commanders with wispy moustaches. Laleh waited in the rear, the pitcher of wine held ready and her face a smiling mask.

The generals hemmed and hawed, bitched and moaned, each with a different idea about how to speed up the siege of Miletus. When Datis brought up news of a Greek force at Malene, not one of them seemed concerned.

    Except Xerxes.

He glowered at their backs, raising his voice over the din. But Datis, if there’s a weakness at Malene, we should exploit it. Even taking Miletus won’t break the Greeks.

Taking Miletus will be a grievous injury, young prince, Datis said. We have not the men or commanders to spare, else the siege will weaken.
