Mah Jongg - Claire Fine
The Five Questions:
WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, HOW?
WHO plays Mah Jongg?
Mah Jongg began in the United States in the 1920’s and was standardized by the National Mah Jongg League in 1937. Today, it is played throughout the country primarily by women but men are increasingly joining the ranks. They tend to make excellent players and couples are now enjoying something fun that they can do together.
WHAT is Mah Jongg?
It is a game which is played using Oriental tiles and racks. A Mah Jongg set may be purchased at a game store or on the Internet. Prices vary and a new set will cost about $100.00. A Mah Jongg card is needed and can be obtained from the Mah Jongg League or may be purchased online or from a game store. The cost is $ 8.00 for a standard sized card and $9.00 for an enlarged card.
WHERE
Most people play in each other’s homes using a standard card table. This game is often played in private clubs, recreation centers, senior centers, and country clubs or just about anywhere a flat surface can be found.

Mah Jongg cards are issued every year around the first of April. So the current year’s card is good through March of the following year. Do not buy cards from unknown sources on the Internet. Last year, my students were anxious for the new card and purchased a bogus card online (before the National Mah Jongg League had issued the new cards) and someone made a fortune. Keep in mind that money paid to the League helps the numerous charities that the League supports.
