Magic for Children - B. V. Pattabhiram
KOLKATA-700017
Yes! You are a Magician!
It is my foremost duty to express deep gratitude to countless teenagers, adults and amateur magicians who have inspired me to produce another volume on magic, after my earlier book ‘Magic For fun’
The primary purpose of this book is to develop scientific thought by dispelling superstitions in the minds of the people about this great art, as until recently, magic has been viewed as a technique applied only in a mysterious background by people with strange powers, special skills, sixth sense, psychic and supernatural powers. Few people have realised that magic is in no way connected with black magic, witchcraft, sorcery, nacromancy and other so-called evil powers which are just imaginary and baseless illusions. The chemical tricks given in every page beneath a particular illustration will expose the tricks of the so-called sorcerors.
Magic, the art of deception, has not lagged behind. Like other arts, it has made great strides during this century in India. New and brilliant tricks have been devised. Improved methods have been invented. ‘Magic for Children’ is designed to give a description of the latest novelties and up-to-date methods.
I am grateful to Shri Sam Dalai, an eminent engineer-turned magician and renowned magic dealer, for his kind foreword. My thanks are due to Indian Express for publishing these tricks in its weekend magazines. I also have to record my sincere thanks to the publishers for bringing out this book in such a beautiful get-up. Of course, it is their magic!
Lastly, but not in the least, I have to record my thanks to my postman who is carrying bundles of letters from my magic fans with a smile and delivering me. He promised to continue to have the smile on his face. Therefore, my friends, do not hesitate to write for any suggestion or a piece of advice.
Okay! Now, it’s time for magic

Topsy-Turvy Match
Props : A match box. blade, cello tape.
MAGIC : Of all drawing room tricks, this one with matches is universally propular. A match box is something available in every home and several tricks can be performed with this simple accessory.
Show an ordinary match box, open it about half an inch and place it on the table. Spectators will find all the match sticks in it. Now shut the box, turn it over five or six times and ask them : ‘Which way is up now?’ Anybody will answer immediately as there is a label on the top. When they say ‘it is upside down’, open the box and show them the sticks. If they say It is the right way ‘, open it and show the tray upside down. This can be repeated any number of times. Every time they will fail to find out which side is the right way.
SECRET : This item needs prior preparation. Remove the tray from the box and empty it. Now carefully cut it in half with a blade. Then turn one half upside down and join the half trays together with cello tape. Finally keep the matches in the magic tray, and replace it inside the box. Now you can perform miracles. But always keep this in mind. You should open the tray only about one inch.

Props : One Black-board, chalk-piece.
MAGIC : Magic in the modern world has a split personality. One is real magic and the other is imaginary. The Oxford dictionary defines the word two ways. First as theatrical art and the second as witchcraft. Magic is real art and witchcraft is nothing but imaginary fear. There are hundreds of magic tricks performed by practitioners of black magic convincing people that they
