She wants to be alone and her mother takes her to the doctor but doesn t include her in the conversation and her mum tries to make her have pills and medicine. Sonia goes back to the doctor and looks and points out pictures and goes to a councilor on her own, then with her family and finds out what can help her to get better and more involved' --David Corner. Sonia is feeling sad and worried. Her family want to find some help for her and take her to see the doctor. The doctor gives her antidepressant medication. Sonia does not feel better and returns to see the doctor. This time he decides to send her to see a counsellor. After some time to talk about her worries Sonia feels much better.
Sonia’s Feeling Sad is one of the Books Beyond Words series of books that tell stories in pictures to help people with intellectual disabilities (sometimes called learning disabilities) and communication difficulties to explore and understand their own experiences.
Guidelines are provided (as text at the back) for carers and supporters, health and other professionals who provide support to people with intellectual disabilities. There is also a suggested storyline and recommended helpful organisations and further resources.

Sheila Hollins, editor of the Books Beyond Words series, is Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry of Disability at St. George’s, University of London, and sits in the House of Lords. She is a past President and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and President of the British Medical Association, 2012–2013.
