About this ebook

WELCOME TO MONTANA JOHN’S.
A PLACE WHERE DREAMS REALLY DO COME TRUE

James Silverman. He sounded like a cross between James Bond and Jack Sparrow, two very delectable men worthy of torturing Anne Feldman in her dreams. He had blue eyes like Bond, but longer brown hair like Sparrow, minus the dreads. And he was here to pillage—her, Anne hoped.
Then he announced the facts. He was at Montana John’s to save it. He’d been brought in to “fix” the restaurant and make it profitable. Which meant things would have to change, sentimental things Anne had hoped would stay the same forever. It was true that the bar needed help, and she’d sunk her life savings into it, but how much could some Brit know about re-opening a restaurant in Montana?
Apparently as much as he knew about opening a woman’s heart, body and soul to true love.

    Montana John’s:

    Grand Opening

    ONE

Anne Feldman stacked the last of the rolled silverware before double-checking the water. There wasn’t enough ice. They needed lots of ice. No one wanted warm water with their meal. Hey, Eric? Can we get more ice in these pitchers, please?

They’re fine, the youngest on the payroll at Montana John’s replied. Quit stressing, Anne.

I’m not stressing. Maybe if she said it enough times, she’d believe it. Why would she stress over a grand opening at a restaurant that she’d worked at since high school?

She knew why. Before, she was the waitress. Now she had part ownership of the business. If it failed she wouldn’t just be out a job. She’d be out her life savings.

    Talk about pressure.

Where’s the candle for this table? Anne yelled out.

Relax. Christie walked up and set the electronic candle on the table before clicking it on. There. Better?

I swear to God, Christie. I’m close to a stroke here. My heart is beating so fast I feel like a hummingbird on meth.

You’ll be fine. Why are you so worried about this? We’ve been open for months. It’s no different than any other night.

Then whose idea was it to do a grand opening in January? We bought the place back in September. She wished it had happened last fall so she wouldn’t be so stressed.

Patrick finally convinced Marcus it was bad luck to not have a grand opening when a business changes owners. Christie shrugged. All the Collins brothers, except for Marcus, are superstitious like that. John was the same way.

    What do you think?

I think things will pick up. Maybe this is what we need. So calm down. No one else is freaking out.

Son of a bitch! The yell and a loud crash came from the kitchen where Kim, the cook, was working.

Anne widened her eyes at Christie. See?

She’s been doing that all day. It’s just her way of letting off a little steam. I’d better go and make sure she didn’t break any more dishes. Christie hurried off, leaving Anne to stress about anything and everything.

She immediately noticed spots on the napkin rings. Eric!

Chill, lady. You’ll scare off the customers.

We aren’t even open yet. She drew in a deep breath and then let it out. Oh, Jesus. We aren’t even open and I’m already having a panic attack.

My mom uses this breathing technique called Le Moose. In through the nose. Out through the mouth.

    It’s called Lamaze.

It doesn’t matter what it’s called. It works. In. Out. In. Out. He breathed with her. There. Better?

She nodded, though she didn’t really feel any better.

Now quit stressing. If you go apeshit I’ll be forced to restrain you. He wiggled his dark brows.

Anne rolled her eyes in return. Since the day John hired Eric McIntyre to bus tables, the kid had been hitting on her. It didn’t matter to him that she was more than ten years older.

As he’d matured and filled out like a linebacker, John had started using him to check IDs at the door after the kitchen closed. None of the under-twenty-one crowd even bothered to bullshit him. Not only was he built like a brick house, but most of the time he knew the customers.

    Go away, Eric.

What? You’re the one who bellowed for me.

Can I get everyone’s attention? Marcus called out.

Thank God. Saved by the manager. Anne went over and stood at the end of the bar. When Eric followed her, she was about to shoo him away when the overbearing cook with a heart of gold walked out of the kitchen and smacked him with a wooden spoon.

You’d better not be chasing her again, Eric. Remember what happened the last time I caught you googly-eyeing her.

He grinned wide and batted his blue eyes at Kim. Would you rather I chase you around?

I’d rather you chase after women your own age, you perv. She’s old enough to be your—

Watch it, Anne stopped her with a quick lift of her finger.

I was going to say big sister. She looked at Anne and shrugged.

    Chase Stephanie, Anne offered.

No way. Eric shook his head. She used to babysit me. Too many weird porno references come to mind.

Anne looked at him. "I used to babysit you."

    Oh, yeah. He grinned.

When you two are through, Marcus said to get their attention. They all fell silent as they waited for him to start.

Welcome to Montana John’s first official grand opening—and I guess first official employee meeting since we’ve never done this before. Or would that be stakeholders’ meeting? I guess it doesn’t matter what we call it. It’s our first meeting as the new owners of MJ’s. He sighed and nodded as the hint of a smile curled the corners of his lips. I still can’t believe we did it. Look around. The people in this room saved John’s dream. I don’t think my brother had a clue how many lives he touched.

He looked sad until Christie slipped her hand into his. The corners of Marcus’s lips curled ever so slightly.

He knew. Christie squeezed his hand as her eyes misted. His smile grew.

Anne chewed on the inside of her lip as she fought to get her emotions back under control. She didn’t want to cry, not in front
