Nine years of marriage had come down to ten minutes.

Eva sat at the bar wondering what would begin for her over the next few hours.

Nerves crackled in her stomach. Sitting in the low light of the Burk Primehouse, one of the best restaurants in the city, on the ground floor of the James, one of the best hotels in all Chicago, she listened to Christmas music drifting from a piano in the lobby.

On the stool beside her, like a constant comfort, sat her husband Peter. She sipped her rum and cola, he his bourbon, eyeing each other with suppressed smiles. In moments of reflection, her main satisfaction in life was the strength of this bond. While they had navigated dark passages in the last few years, she counted herself lucky to have dodged the traumas and divorces erupting in many marriages around them.

‘But now,’ Eva wondered, ‘am I tempting fate?’

Even as anticipation plucked her nerves, she was hopeful. Eva sat at the bar with her husband waiting for a woman. If everything went well, the three of them would finish the night sated and exhausted, in bed.

It was one thing to travel the world with her man, venturing off the tourist routes, exploring unexpected wonders and surprises in far away lands. It was another to step out of the normal confines of marriage and contemplate what they were doing. A person could find any number of guides to the backcountry of every continent on earth.
