LUST, TRUST, & STILETTOS
One would think, being one of Soulburg’s premier vampire escorts, my life would be glamorous and filled with excitement. But I am now, as I have been since I turned fourteen and left the safety of the convent where I was dumped just after being brought into this world, a whore. No one calls me that to my face now, and I pretend the word doesn’t apply to me, but the truth is: Sex is my trade.
In some ways it was inevitable. I think EASY is tattooed on my forehead in ink only men can see. Always has been. Is it my fault I’m lusty and could usually be turned on with just a touch? Not really. It’s just part of being me. However, after a couple of centuries the motions have become rote and the joy is gone. Sex is boring. It has been for a while. Now I only screw to get paid. So, I’m right back to where I started. I snuck out of the convent for the last time to make my own way in the world because I knew there was no way I would ever be a good nun. Mother Superior drilled that into my head often enough. Now I’m a terrible whore.
The man above me grunted, gaining speed, letting me know he was almost finished with his fun. Finally. I made some appropriate noises to convince him I was enjoying it almost as much as he and raked my nails down his back while showing him my fangs. He shuddered and moaned, so I showed them again.
There’s something about my fangs that just makes most men squirm with delight. It’s a total turn-on for guys. That’s why they buy my time. Perhaps it has something to do with how slim and sharp they look. I took my working name from the look of those fangs—and from the shoes I wear. Stilettos.
Stiletto. That’s my name. I needed a new one to fit my persona after the change. Exotic. Dangerous. Different. It fit me both as an escort and a shield: a protector of the vampire community, my other occupation. But this whole room was shabby beyond belief. And this was what I was reduced to most of the time. The natural daughter of no-one-knew-who turned whore. A vampiric call girl on the shabby side of Soulburg. My spirits sank lower than they had in ages. I was in a funk, a depression, a rut, and I had no idea how to get out. How did a vampire cure such things, when the sameness of the world finally catches up with them?
I growled low in my throat, wishing my trick was finished, when my phone rang with that special tone I reserve just for Raymond Prescott, Sharp Happenings’s illustrious haven leader and CEO. I listened to I’m Too Sexy
for a few more seconds before reaching for the phone on the cheap bedside table and answered the call.
Hello? Hello?
Ray said through the phone.
Oh. Sorry, Ray. I was thinking.
I pulled the phone away from my mouth to coach my customer and move him along. "Mmm, yeah baby, that’s right. Harder," I said.
Ray sounded more than slightly disgusted. Really, Mary Katherine? You still answer the phone when you’re with a client?
How many times, Ray? How many times do I have to tell you not to call me that?
I hated when he used the name the nuns gave me.
A few more apparently. Call me back when the guy finishes, alright? Those sounds are extremely annoying.
Nah, you called. Spit it out. What do you want?
I made some more noises and
